Polling vs. Pushing... Battery Consumption?

I've been toying with different email apps, with different settings for each. What I'm really curious about is how much difference in battery drain there is between the different ways of syncing email.

The stock 'email' app is setup as an all or nothing email sync. It either pushes data constantly, or its turned off. I'm really not sure how much data is consumed by having a constant "push" but I do know that it updates instantly when a new email comes in.

The 'gmail' app does not have push capability, but rather functions by syncing, either with auto-sync or manually sync'ing. The frustrating part is, there is no way to setup a sync frequency... as far as I can tell, once again, if I send an email, it shows up on the phone instantly. This in turn must be draining battery, but I'm not certain how it compares to push email. I've tried a few days with auto-sync off and simply manually syncing when I pick the phone up, and my battery consumption was certainly better.

I truly wish that gmail was setup with an auto-sync frequency, as it seems to be a huge oversight. I've tried K-9, which DOES have an auto-sync frequency feature, but I didn't like all the random folders updating nor did I appreciate the notification that I have 2500+ emails unread.

Can you help me understand how push and polling are actually working. Are they seriously continuously searching for data when toggled on?
