Poor phone performance

When I got this phone in late March I was amazed how much faster it was then my beat up 2 year old iPhone 3g. Videos on youtube in HQ would run perfect without any pause, the responsiveness when I touched the screen was instant and web pages would load very fast. I was even in 4G coverage a couple times and was even more amazed. Now there are many times when I touch the screen multiple times with no response, web pages are not loading near as fast as they used too, and now when I watch videos on youtube it is just as slow as my old iPhone. In my bedroom when my phone was new I could watch full episodes of High Stakes Poker in HQ on youtube without any pause for the video to load. This morning I couldn't even listen to a song on youtube because it would only load 2 seconds than stop to load another 2 then stop over and over.

Any input would be nice because with the video camera on my phone recording virtually no sound at a concert and now the performance declining I'm really regretting buying this phone. :(

That's a good idea. Is a soft reboot (holding down power button) as effective as pulling the battery?

Battery pull is the equivalent of pulling the plug out of the wall for your PC.
this Should only be done as a last resort. IE: the phone is locked up and the power button is not responding.

a normal reboot resets the phone like a battery pull but safely shuts down the device while it does so.

* if possible Always power down before you remove the battery.

Try clearing your cached files. Massive caches of e-mails, texts, etc can gum up some apps and if they are apps that normally run in the background that'll slow things down even more.
2 Free Tools in the Marketplace I'd recommend ... Astro File Manager and History Eraser. Keep your phone's memory clean as you can. The sluggishness you describe can be corrected.

It's a known issue with sound with the video recording, the update soon to be released should solve that issue, those of us who rooted don't have that issue since we have the update already :)

Heh. I'm on my third thunderbolt since I got screwed over with the whole 14 day return thing but I have similar problems with the phone screen response. It happens the most when texting. Sometimes the area where B is won't work, or the space bar, ect. Having that problem RIGHT now too, it's even worse when I have it charging.

I did battery pulls on my INC and never had issues. I love to ROM it up with these phones but its true that a power off is just as easy. I can't count the time I pull the batt due to miui freezes.

have you tried to calibrate your screen?

You know I've been having this problem lately also. When my phone lags really bad when typing or switching screens, Opening apps. But it only happens when i am charging my phone?

Yeah but the problem isn't the screen calibration. It's just that it lags so bad when typing sometimes. Ill hit Q and it will type Q about 1-2 seconds later. Its like the BB Storm. I would type a sentence and by the time I was done it will still typing. Sucks.

Yeah I get that sometimes too, I wonder what the cause exactly

The problem is the stock messaging app. As it folks up with messages it causes terrible lag throughout the whole phone. On both mine and my girlfriends phone we force stopped the messaging app after deletingall threads and are now using GOSMS Pro and now the phone rubs flawlessly.

I was having similar issues with the stock message app.
try this:

open message app
menu
settings
check "delete old messages"
set a limit (200 or so)
restart
message app lag should go away

(this fixed my problem)

if not

menu
settings
applications
manage apps
all
message
clear data

restart your phone.

or you can try a 3rd party app.

good luck.

Mine does the lag on typing thing once in a while too. However I never have saved messages. It does it at other times too, like when I'm typing here. I just figured some background process was going on and that slowed my device.

It doesn't last long or happen often, but I have exoerinced it. Annoying. I just end up typing at a snails pace til it catches up.

Its not just the threads. The whole messaging app on the HTC Thunderbolt is coded poorly. Even with cleared message threads the app causes lag throughout the whole phone. Until HTC fixes the messsging spp, the entire phone is going to continue to lag because of it. For those having any lag issues on their phone. Do this:

Open messsging app. Delete all threads and conversations. Download either GoSMS, ChompSMS, or Handscent. Turn off notifications on the stock messsging app. Go to the settings, applications, running, and force stop the stock app, clear data and cache. Then retart your phone and continue using your phone with one of the new messaging apps you downloaded.

I did this on both my phone and my girlfriends and now neither of us ever have any lag issues what so ever through out the whole phone. Everything runs faster. The keyboard never lags anymore. Something HTC did to their messsging app completely ruined it and the whole phone sucks because of it. Try it out and let me know if it has been better.

My phone doesn't lag, at all.

HTC doesn't optimize the kernel or filesystem mounts worth a damn. Those two alone go very far in curing any slowdowns.

No lag for me, at all, at 1024mhz. Very, very fast, and I consistently get 2.2k Quadrant scores for those who care. about benches.

I shouldn't have to keep my message limit <200 to avoid lag. A phone with this capacity, memory, and speed should be able to handle it. It doesn't matter if it is on the stock messaging applications or on a 3rd party since I recently started using Handcent. As of late, I have deactivated my thunderbolt and went back to my BB. Too many problems for me to keep using it as a dedicated work phone and always on the move with my job.

The proximity sensor should have the display off during a call unless you are holding the device away from your face.
