Pop-up notifications

For the native gmail app in lollipop, is there some way to get a pop-up at the top of the screen when I'm using the device and a new gmail arrives. I get sound but no pop-up showing a preview of the message. I get it for text messages but not gmails.

Hi,

You will have to open gmail app and adjust settings for notifications of which there are many. Slide out control panel from left side after opening gmail app.
*scroll down to bottom and tap settings.
*now ta your gmail address
* find manage lables and tap first one.
*check each box you need,and set what sound for that folder.
*tap return when done,and tap next folder. You will do this for each one you want to be notified of incoming. I use same sound for all my folders,but you can have any available on device menus.

I've had those set and get sounds all the time as gmail arrives. What I don't get though when a new message arrives is a pop up window at the top with a preview of the message. Say I'm browsing in chrome and a new message arrives. I get the sound but no popup window showing say the sender or subject. Am I missing something?
