Popular ROM flavor of the month?

I haven't messed with custom ROMs since I gave up my original Droid for the Galaxy Nexus LTE six months ago. I'veactually been very happy with stock and have not had muchof a need for ROMs. But with the slowness to get to 4.0.4, GPS lock-on issues, 3G/4G switching, etc, I think it's time to flash a ROM or three and see what will improve.

I'm not all that into UI customization. I look for stability, access to settings and working hardware. Any recommendations for me?

Thanks

I had been running Axiom Cmplx but yesterday flashed Patient Zero 2.5 .I like them both lots of customizations.Im not sure how often they will get updated now that DT has an HTC One tho.
But they are both great roms .

For more stock like experience, the top of the list would be probably be bugless beast or redemption rom.

Feature rich options include AOKP, latest AXIOM, Liquid, and gummynex.

:) enjoy whichever one(s) you try out.

AOKP is my favorite, but if you don't need as feature-rich of an experience, then I'd go with Bugless Beast. I really like Bugless Beast, but it's a little plain for me.

These are your best options in my opinion. I keep going back to AOKP though. Simple features and stable build make it solid. I just bounced off Gummy Nex even though I liked it it just had some random bugs and an occasional lag that I never saw on AOKP or Liquid.

For me BAMF 1.25 is very stable and seems to have the best battery life. Outside of that for more features, I am usually on Liquid 1.35. I seem to switch back and forth every couple weeks or if a new version of either comes out.

Thank you all for sharing your opinions. I used bugless beast on my original Droid, but did not follow it once I got the GNex (unlike CM9 and AOKP). I might have to make BB my first ROM to mess with.

Meh go with AOKP. Most options and stuff to play with. It's not like you have to use everything.. You can keep it looking completely stock if you want, but you might as well flash something you can really play with :)

Good points...

Do the more popular ROMs have faster GPS lock than stock? Sometimes it can take two minutes under a non obstructed sky to get a lock.

Not sure as mine hasn't been stock since December 15th. But my gps locks in about 10 seconds.

Looks nice...at least to me because it's so close to stock :)

Nitro is adding some good stuff as it matures. The guys in the thread rave. I might try it one day. ;)

there are some gps lock fix apps in the market you can try.. forget what they're called but basically they just redownload the maps/libraries and make sure everything is straight. i used it on my thunderbolt and saw some improvement.

on the gnex ive only had gps issues a couple times, and i think it was bc service in my area was all screwy those days. otherwise, i get fast lock times but i also live in new york wehre we have like a thousand cell towers everywhere.

jk ;)

I just loaded up BAMF yesterday and so far smooth and no problems. Battery life seems to already be better for a first day, however I didnt use the phone too much.

I had BAMF on my Thunderbolt and they did amazing work so I'm going to ride this out for a while. Nice customizable options. Only thing I want is to be able to make my text messaging background black instead of white.

If you would like a darker themed MMS, flash this file. It is the mms apk from the revolution theme. Its has a darker blue text on black background. Very subdued.
If you don't like it, I can make a file for you to go back to stock.

I've got a blacked out MMS I use as well.. its more standard looking than that revolution one if that's what you're looking for. Snatched it from some theme on rootzwiki, can't remember or I would give credit, but here it is (don't have it in a flashable zip.. you'd have to drop this in /system/app using root explorer, then just make sure permissions are set to
xx

and reboot. Or you could just push it there over adb and reboot.)
Maybe I'll just make you a flashable zip if that will be easier...lol...

haha thanks guys! I think I'm gonna load up 2defmouze's tomorrow because I do like the stock look, just figure a black background helps save battery with the GNex screen.

Really appreciate the tips and links, thanks again.
