Popup notifications on whatsapp

Hello everyone!
I have the following doubt/question. I just bought a new phone (Samsung s6) with Marshmallow 6.0.1 already installed. I realized that when someone sends me a text on whatsapp and I am with the screen ON, either the message appears big, like a preview, with the chance to answer to it, or it doesn't appear at all.. depending what I have setted in my notification settings on whatsapp. This is quite annoying and I have seen some people that when they receive a text with the screen ON, just a line at the top of the screen appears, with the name of the person who sent the message and just a line with the beginning with the message. This doesn't work for me and in my case the whole preview popup big square appears, which is really unhandy if I am working on something else. Can you please help understanding what I can do to have the same line at the top of my screen? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Try going to whatsapp's settings -> notifications, there are two types of notifications there, message and groups... there should be a "Popup notification" setting underneath both of these, I guess it's set to "Only when screen "on"" now, change it to "No popup" and it won't give you a popup window, only it'll show on your locked screen, and with the line on the top when the device is unlocked.
Hope that helps! :)

Hi,
and thanks for your reply first of all! Yes, you were right and I had set "always popup". now I set it to "no popup" as you suggested.. but when my screen is locked and someone sends me a message on whatsapp nothing happens.. I just hear the vibration but nothing appears on the screen.. which is not what I wanted :( on the other hand when my screen is ON I see now a little window opening at the top of the screen! not really the small line like I saw on someone else's phone but at least it's not anymore the big popup window that was appearing in the middle of the screen.. is this the normal behavior on 6.0.1 ?

Mine doesn't turn on the screen when I receive a new message, it just appears as a notification like the person's photo, name and start of the message (one line, I think), and I have to turn the screen on to see what's the message and from whom it is. But if nothing appears at all, maybe you should check your general notifications settings (settings -> notifications, my icon is orange) to see whether the device is allowed to show notifications for this app, as if it's disabled, that's why you don't receive them. My phone has exactly the same OS and settings as yours, and shows them the way you described, so maybe it's a problem with something else, if not the notifications, but never heard of such before.

Pfff.. hating these popups things.. so now when the screen is LOCKED, everything is okey and you just confirmed me that it's the normal behavior.
Instead, when the screen is LOCKED the only way to turn it ON when I receive a text, is by allowing the popups "on scren off ", right? otherwise if someone sends me a message, the screen will stay black.. and to notice that I received something I have press the home button.. am I right?

Yes, that's the normal "behaviour", the screen stays black, unless the popup windows are turned on... usually if your silent/do not disturb mode is on, the blue light (it's on the top left corner) should start blinking, showing you have notifications pending (all the messaging apps, missed calls); it does so if the volume is on too, but in that case should also vibrate/make a sound to attract your attention. The light was green if you have a new email, I think. If yours doesn't do that, I guess it's some kind of a setting that it's turned off. Pressing the home screen button shows you what you've "missed", but it should have that blinking light too.
