Portrait mode (bokeh effect) of objects vs. people?

Is it still possible to take portrait/bokeh (blurred background) photos of objects (e.g. food, drinks) vs. people? Initial Z4 reviews indicated the new Moto camera app required face detection for portrait mode, but I'm wondering if that was accurate. With my Z2 Force, I often take portrait and other trick mode shots of food & beverage.
