Possible method to root 4.3

I'm sort of making this up as I go along, but worst case you'll be no worse off:

Remove the back cover of your phone so you can easily pull the battery.

Download the flashable zip version of SuperSU from here: UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip | by upndwn4par for Galaxy S 3
and the Knox remover from here: [CWM][SCRIPT][4.2.2/4.3] DE-SAMSUNGNIZER Script V4.1 - Clean all unneded Samsung Crap - xda-developers

and copy them to the top level of your internal or external SD.

Install your custom recovery in Odin. Philz recovery seems to work for people who couldn't get TWRP or CWM to work.

Philz: Dev-Host - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service (use the d2spr version)
CWM & TWRP recoveries: [Recovery] Flashable and the Latest - CWM 6.0.4.3 - TWRP 2.6.3.0 - Stock - xda-developers (use the latest versions)

Make sure the Odin options are as below, with auto reboot unchecked:

Once recovery is installed, pull the battery, so the phone doesn't reboot normally, and disconnect the usb cable.

Put the battery in, and boot into recovery. It is, I think, critical the phone doesn't boot normally. That's where your custom recovery gets clobbered.

Flash supersu and the Knox remover. DO NOT reboot or exit recovery in between.

Reboot. Download and install SuperSU from the playstore. It should prompt you to update binaries. If it doesn't, I'm out of ideas.

Cross your fingers and reboot.

Let me know what happens.

This worked for me :D Thank you so much!
-Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII

Junno 1, will this work with my Spring Samsung Galaxy S3? I haven't ever rooted before. Is there a way to back up my original rom, settings, etc. in case I need to return to my original state? I've tried to find the basic instructions on rooting. But, I don't want to mess this up and my Sprint S3 has updated to android 4.3.3

Thanks,

If I did use SuperSU, how would I update the binaries? I've spent over ten hours trying to root my virgin mobile SPH L710(Samsung galaxy s3). I'll be Dam'ned to pay anyone a cent for tethering, and I can't even root my phone :/ I've cyagenmod, ChainSSD, and the SuperSU. I took out the Knox and Samsung carp off, but whenever I do at boot my phone "installs apps" I think it's just foreclosing superuser anyway with that. I'm using 4.3 jellybean btw. Thanks in advanced.

Have you tried following the steps in post 30 of this thread? What happens when you do?

For now, forget about cyanogenmod. By chainsDD, do you mean the Superuser app? How did you take "out the Knox carp off"?

Without knowing what you've done, and how your phone is configured now, I'm reluctant to make any suggestions of what you should do next.

No, flashing a ROM won't affect the bootloader. In that respect you're safe. The Knox warranty bit has probably already been triggered by the instaaltion of the custom recovery, so that's not an issue any more.
I'd like to suggest editing post #30 to include this information. This "post #30 technique" is referenced quite a bit here and in other threads, might be worth pointing out so people who just go straight to that post know that the warranty bit will be triggered. A lot of people don't care about that but some people might. A lot of people don't even know that there is a warranty bit or what the consequences of tripping it are so I think it's worth pointing that out before people go to the point of no return.
Also, is there any way to wifi tether? The old app errors out now.
This costs a couple of bucks but is worth considering:https://forums.androidcentral.com/e....snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en&token=XLZaqf1W My only previous experience for free WiFi tethering is the the TrevE Mod app and this two dollar app has a lot more options if you need them.
For WiFi tether, many of the custom apps include a modified WiFi hotspot app that will let you tether without Sprint knowing.
What do you mean custom apps? Can you give an example or two?
No, plenty of people have rooted 4.3 and flashed a custom recovery. What trips Knox is trying to flash a Kernel that doesn't have the Knox bootloader, or flashing an older ROM in Odin (which replaces the bootloader).
What? Doesn't installing a custom recovery also trip knox? That's my understanding, and you said that in the previous post. I don't mind tripping it but can you clarify, does installing custom recovery trip knox or not?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was rooted successfully!

Thank you to all who have posted the wonderful information.
:-)

Keep a smile on your face and love in your heart!

Good point. Thanks.

I guess I interpreted "trip knox" differently. You're correct that it will reset the warranty bit. I interpreted the comment as Knox preventing root.

And there's a hacked Sprint hotspot that should work with 4.3 here: [MOD][Deodex][Odex][MB1][MC3][MD4][MK3]Hotspot Mod - Working 4G - xda-developers

When I am using the custom recovery and i try to access my sd card (internal and external) my s3 will not mount the sd card, so I cant flash any files....

Sounds like you have an older version of recovery. Which recovery are you using (CWM, TWRP, etc.) and what version?

Just wanted to thank EVERYONE in general, not only on this thread but in this forum as well.
I woke up one day trying to watch a soccer match on my Gs3 and needed Flash player so i decided to root my phone, I ended up soft bricking it and i was so pissed i was about to brake it it a million pieces, but today 2/15/14 i decided to get back on the horse and came along this thread, not only did i fixed my gs3 but i was able to root it and now Im watching all i want plus many other things i had no idea could be done with a rooted gs3.

Again, thank you all very much!!

Did the deal from post #30 today. Thanks for the Info!

Just a couple of things that might help someone else:

1. I couldn't use the recovery from the links because Odin wouldn't see them for some reason? so I located TWRP recovery myself and it worked(kinda, see #2).

2. Someone above mentioned not being able to see the files to flash in recovery. I had the same problem, specifically with TWRP 2.6.3.1. I couldn't see ANY files from my phone or sdcard after multiple attempted installs. The easy fix was to use TWRP 2.6.3.0 and it worked like a champ. I did notice that post #30 mentions to use the latest, so I thought I should mention it.

Thanks again for all the work!

Thanks for the info. Some versions earlier than 2.6.3.0 had the problem of not being able to see the files, and I'm surprised that bug has returned in 2.6.3.1.

I'm a novice rooter, but even I was able to get my Galaxy S3 from Sprint (L710) rooted using the method in post #30. Actually, I'm an Android novice as well, which speaks of the ease with which this can be done. Just one suggestion: maybe give a little more in-depth explanation for people who are computer and tech savvy, but not necessarily root or Android savvy? It took me a couple of days to learn the prerequisite jargon (i.e., "flashing" a file, installing a recovery and the like), but with just a bit more explanation, any fool with a laptop can successfully root the evil 4.3.

Now off to have fun. =) Thanks again meyerweb!

To be honest, I'm not sure it's a good idea to have "any fool with a laptop" rooting their phones. That's what leads to bricked devices. Having put the effort into understanding things, you're better positioned to go beyond a simple root.

That said, I've thought about it, and one of these days when I have more free time I'll probably write up an more detailed post.
