I did what is discussed in this thread this morning. I was already showing using cdma, but I did all of it anyways. Just checked my battery.
11 hours 45 minutes since off charger.
Battery still at 59%

The NETWORK fix was already set up on both my Evo as well as my wife's, so not sure if that did anything.

The charging trick seems to have done a lot, the first 20% of depletion was really where I saw a difference. Like others, the phone would get down to 85% pretty darn quickly and then slow its descent around 30%. Now it just seems more consistent across the entire life of the battery.

My EVO has no speaker -- I can hear on the phone OK and the vibrate works but no speaker -- so Sprint sent me a replacement, but I haven't gotten home to set it up yet.... but, more to the point of this thread, I did the recommended settings on my first EVO but find that my phone gets hot (uncomfortably so in my shirt pocket) plus it discharges way too fast. Perhaps it's just a "busted phone"(?)

Kind of frustrating -- I agree with those on this thread who observed that this battery thing shouldn't be. I'm seriously considering getting an iPhone 4 tomorrow.... and that's a longtime anti-Apple guy saying this!

I love my Evo! why would you get an Iphone? haven't you tried Fring video-conferencing yet?
I get sometimes 24 hours (minus the time I sleep) of occasional use. I have been using the trick with extra-charging in the morning, but it doesn't take as long to get back to green, maybe the battery is getting conditioned, or the android can estimate the charge better.
I am going to try the cell standby fix (so far, trying with typing in the codes and changing GSM(auto)PRL to CDMA(auto)PRL.

Click on the cell standby time and it will bring up another screen. IN that second screen it will show you Time without signal.

When I click on "Cell Standby", it brings me to another screen, but it doesn't have "Time without signal". It only has "Time On".

Also, do we have to change anything using "Network" if it is already set to "CDMA auto PRL"?

Thanks, Derek

Hi, I come from a palm pre, where my battery life sucked at work because the signal was so crappy and the phone kept looking for a tower. Forecd Roam hack solved that problem for me. I wonder if this is the same problem for the EVO. I checked and I am at work and without a signal 54%. But that did not surprise me cause I know sprint service at work sucks. I wonder if following this suggestion is a back door solution to the forced hack, or will screw things up when I leave work, as the sprint signal most every where else is fine. I wont be at work tomorrow, so I will wait and see what tomorrow brings for my time without a signal. I would be interested to hear if problems arrise from this once people get into good coverage.

No way to force the EVO into "Roam Only" mode?

When I did the battery fix, the TWS came up. Here's my screen grab. Thank you ShootMe!

I did the fixes you suggested, not all of them, but turned off sync all the time, and did the ATK. Decided instead of getting donked all the time I would rather just check the phone more often and so I shut a bunch down. I do get emails through gmail constantly and I did download Advanced Task Killer. Right off I got over 21 hours and still had over 40 percent of my battery. I decided to charge it last night and took it off the charger and so far it has been off approx 20 hours and still going strong. Thanks for the help, I am SOOOOOO much happier with my Evo now. I had been thinking about sending it back as before I was lucky to get 3 hours.

No the two steps are completely unrelated and independent of one another.

Just to make sure:

1) when u run network, scroll down and it should be GSM auto PRL

2) hit menu then change radio band which gets you the foreclose menu hit force-close.

3) change radio to CDMA auto PRL

4) repeat step 2 and it boots you out.

The setting should stay at CDMA auto PRL when you go back into Network app just to look. If its not then I dont know what the solution would be.

I am doing this not through the network app put by typing the following code into the phone dialer: *#*#4636#*#* ... It does do 2 forced closes... Is that what you mean by being booted out? Or should it take me all the way to the homescreen?

When I used either method the second forceclose always booted me out all the way to the homescreen.

You don't need to download the Network program from the Marketplace to make sure the CDMA AUTO (PRL) is set. You can access directly from your EVO by just punching in a few numbers on the phone's dialpad. Just open up the phones dialpad and punch in this exactly.

*#*#4636#*#*

After that go into Phone Information and scroll down. You will see Set preferred network type. There you can change it, if it is not there, to CDMA auto (PRL) or anything else you want to change. This code also lets you look at other things about your phone.

From the OP Quote:

"2) Go into the battery usage settings again and click on Cell Standby. If you see "TIME WITHOUT SIGNAL" at above 15%, you need to go to the market and download NETWORK. ONce it is downloaded open the program and you will see that the SET PREFERRED NETWORK TYPE is set to GSM AUTO (PRL). I found out via XDA DEVELOPER SITE that this is a error with Android. You will need to change it to CDMA AUTO (PRL). Hit Menu> then "Select radio band" you will get a FORCE QUIT popup just hit force quit to make it go away. Then change it to CDMA AUTO (PRL) and then hit menu again to get the FORCE QUIT and then hit it. IT will boot you out (this is normal). This will change your settings to CDMA and you will see that TIME WITHOUT SIGNAL drop to below 10%. I'm at 3% now. "

So we aren't able to make these CDMA PRL auto through the regular Sense UI? In order to tinker with that preference we must download that Network program? Just want to make sure. Mine is at 30%.

Cool...thanks....just did that and my phone is set to CDMA auto (PRL) and I still show 18%....a farcry from 1% as others have mentioned. Just earlier it was displaying 29%.

I just wanted to post my results as a thanks for all the info here.

I turned off all unnecessary wireless networks, background data, did the Network CDMA prl fix (even though I didn't need to), installed ATK and did the battery conditioning from the OP. I just got the phone today so I don't have a real baseline.

With light to moderate usage I got over 22 hours of unplugged evo joy today. Actually could have been more but I purposely ran the battery down with videos and all radios on because I want to do the battery conditioning again tonight.

So in short, this works. Just be cognizant of your usage and you'll be fine. Thanks guys!

Does anyone have info on the other options available for the network menu? These instructions say to choose CDMA auto (PRL). Can anyone shed light on what the other options might do? WCDMA preferred, WCDMA only, CDMA only, etc.

Thanks.

WCDMA is another 4G standard that is not supported yet. Since the Sprint phone only has a CDMA radio I'm not sure what the CDMA only setting might do. Perhaps eliminate roaming? Or perhaps it's no different than CDMA auto?

EvDO only probably means only 3G; the 1xrTT radio is shut off. Without 1xRtt you'll get no texts or phone calls, I think.

GSM/CDMA auto might be for a world phone with both CDMA and GSM radios in it. I'm only guessing.
