Possibly interested in the Nexus...

I signed up during the double the data promotion that just ended and got 4GB for $30/mo. I haven't yet even used 2GB a month. However, I like not having to worry about how much data I am using.

Also, if you get the GNex, you can get free MHS using toggles unrooted or if you root, using the wifi tether for rooted users. Another bonus! You can go through data quickly if you use your phone as a MHS.

Yeah that is another plus. I have AT&T's unlimited data plan right now and I would occasionally love to tether to my iPad but I can't or AT&T will take it from me. I am by no means trying to abuse the network but it would be nice to have the option.

So you signed up with VZW recently and all you did was call and ask them to put on the MHS feature? What if they won't? I mean did they know what they were doing? Is this a legitimate way to get grandfathered in?

VZW does throttle on the 3G network, but not on the 4G network. At least not yet, who knows what will happen in the future.

How does AT&T know you are tethering?

So you signed up with VZW recently and all you did was call and ask them to put on the MHS feature?

Had to make 3 calls for each line before I could get a rep that would do it. First 2 each time said that feature was only available to unlimited data plan subscribers and that they no longer offered those. So I said thank you and hung up, waited a bit and called again until I got a rep that would do it. Key is to say you want the feature.

What if they won't?
Say thank you, hang up and call back.

I mean did they know what they were doing?
They never said to me whether they did or they didn't.

Is this a legitimate way to get grandfathered in?
Define what you mean by legitimate. It's not fraud or theft. I didn't lie, threaten or bribe them and I was polite and said thank you.

Depending on the terms of the agreement, it could be breach of some asinine provision. However, I would limit anyone from saying one way or the other with an issue this unclear--if only because the unauthorized practice of law carries one heckuva penalty ;).

I presume throttling on 4G will happen eventually, but I doubt there's enough phones using it to really cause concern on VZW's end.

With the tethering, they may "find out" with a prolonged spike in data usage.

Many people have reported tethering and they yanked the unlimited plan from them. It was all over the net back in early 2011.

I meant if its obtained this way can we hold onto it forever basically. I read back in July that they said all of those who were grandfathered would be able to retain the plan even when upgrading. Hopefully this will be true for those who got it this way.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and at least try the G Nexus out and test Verizon out before porting my number over.

Can I ask what you pay a month? I was gonna do the 450 min plan plus unlimited texting plus the data which comes out to $89.99mo before taxes. My AT&T bill always comes out to $92 after taxes so I'm sure I'll be paying a little more on VZW.

Bottom line is this - at any time they can get rid of all of the unlimited plans unless there is a contract provision that says otherwise. I am guessing they have put plenty of weasel language in their contract that would allow them to do it once your contract is up and not let anyone renew an unlimited plan.

I think that, too.

Guess I better start using more data then so I look consistent!

I'm sure they can. What's interesting, if you look at the terms of the agreement, it so heavily favors carriers that it would be interesting to see it challenged, particularly under consumer protection laws. But alas, I need not get myself in trouble :).

And yes, use that data!

On the GNex, if you try to activate the MHS through the settings, up comes a box that checks your account and if you aren't paying the extra $30/mo, they ask if you want them to activate the MHS for your account.

But if you install a toggle, this doesn't happen and you can use your phone to tether and so far at least, I haven't received a charge for it.

For now, VZW is saying you can keep your unlimited plan. I am sure that they have weasel language in their contracts that would let them change that policy and prevent you from renewing it in the future. I haven't read the contract but I really doubt that they don't have weasel language in their contract.

As I understand it, you have a contract for the first 2 years. Once that contract expires, they are free to change the terms of the contract on renewal. So far to keep customers they let you keep whatever plan you had upon renewal. We will see how that changes in the future.

I read back in July that they said all of those who were grandfathered would be able to retain the plan even when upgrading.
This is true for now, but like I said, I guarantee you the contracts have language in them that will allow them to change the terms of your plan upon renewal. They probably even have language in the contract that allow them to end your contract if you use too much data just like Sprint does with roaming. So far VZW has chosen to allow people to keep their unlimited plans.

It's like their new every 2 credit that they ended:
Verizon quietly scraps "new every two" credit - Jan. 13, 2011

VZW will allow you to keep your unlimited plan until they don't. For now, they are saying you can keep it when you renew and upgrade.

Really, what you should fear the most is throttling of 4G LTE like they do on the 3G network. If they started to throttle the unlimited 4G LTE plans starting at using 2GB of data, you would be better off with the double the data 4GB tiered plan.

Hopefully this will be true for those who got it this way.
I will let you know in about 18 months.

I have a family plan with 700 shared anytime minutes, unlimited texting, unlimited any mobile-to-mobile (only offered in Florida for now), free nights and weekends and unlimited data for 2 phones.

$105 = 700 shared anytime minutes, unlimited texting, unlimited mobile-to-mobile, free nights and weekends
$60 = unlimited data x 2 lines
$5 = insurance on GNex only (iPhone has AppleCare for $99 for 2 years)

Total is $170 a month but with fees/surcharges and taxes = $190.

In my zip code, for an individual plan 450 anytime minutes, unlimited VZW mobile-to-mobile, free nights and weekends and unlimited texting the price is $60. Unlimited data (or 4G during the double the data plan) is another $30. So your cost would be $90 before taxes and surcharges and fees.

You can go to AmazonWireless: Cell Phones, Cell Phone Plans, and Accessories to figure out if there are any differences in price in your area. Just put in your zip code and add the phone to your cart and then pick your plan.

It is called an adhesion contract and they can be attacked for that reason. Honestly, it would cost them more in attorney's fees to defend rather than to just let people keep the unlimited plans. They can always throttle, which is what they do on the 3G network.

My guess is that they will someday throttle on 4G rather than take away the unlimited plans. Then you would be better off with the double the data tiered 4GB plan since they usually start throttling at 2GB.

So you can add the MHS feature on the phone itself? Doing this gives you unlimited data or do you still have to call?

Doing it that way will not add the MHS feature unless you already have an unlimited data plan.

If you have a tiered plan, it will change you to a MHS + data bundle.

I know all of this doesn't make much sense, but these distinctions are key because of how VZW set up their plans. At first the MHS was free if you had an unlimited data plan. So they made it a feature since it was free. Then they started charging $30 for the MHS feature but kept it a feature that you could only add if you had unlimited data plan.

Then they got rid of unlimited data plans and went to tiered data plans and bundled the data plans with the MHS if you wanted MHS.

So no, you can't get the MHS feature that way if you are on a tiered data plan. If you are on a tiered data plan, you must call to get the MHS feature. That then kicks your data plan up to unlimited data.

Out of every phone on Verizon, I'd say that the Nexus is still the best. Over 4S, over MAXX (lol), over everything.

But then again, I'm a stock type of guy. I'll say this until the next Nexus is released, then I'll say that is the best with the Galaxy Nexus being the second best.

But yeah. Best phone, by far. Jump on it! :D

Seems just as popular as the iPhone 4s. I love my iPhone 4s but I am getting bored with it. I want more. I want LTE. I tried the Galaxy S II on AT&T two months ago and it was great but the download speeds were not good for an HSPA+ 21Mbps device. Verizon has LTE everywhere I go and I want to be able to take advantage of that.

Hopefully they will support it for a long time.

If you expect to use LTE regularly remember to take a charger or second battery with you. I live in an area that hasn't been blessed with LTE yet, so I keep my nexus in CDMA only mode and have no complaints about battery life but from every review, personal query, and forum comment I've taken in, it seems that the 4G radios in this and other VZW phones drink more juice than top fuel dragsters. Otherwise it kicks booty.

I can't make it through the day without switching batteries or charging and I don't use the phone heavily. You can also keep a car charger in the car if you travel during the day or have a long commute.

But yeah, it is a real eye opener for someone coming from a 3G phone Makes that Razr Maxx look appealing.

I've owned the OG Droid, the EVO 4g, the Epic, an Iconia a500, a G2, the EVO 3D, the Nexus S 4G, and now the GNexus. It is the best mobile device I've ever owned. I highly recommend it. I might even keep it for my full 2 Years. Very feature rich and the LTE network is worlds ahead of comparable carriers/phones. I again highly recommend it. You'll be very satisfied.

I am looking forward to trying it out and LTE. The only 4G I've experienced is HSPA+ which isn't bad but the fastest I got was like 8mbps down. I'm seeing people pulling 45mbps down On LTE. Battery life won't be an issue as I'll pick p a car charger and possibly larger battery. Gotta love Android for that.

Anyway Switching to Verizon will be more expensive and not offer any mobile to any mobile like AT&T does. Unfortunely all my friends have T-Mobile and I 86'd them last year due to their horrible phones and lack of 3G here. AT&T currently gives me a $5/mo student discount and Verizon will not. Verizon did check to see if I cold get a discount from my employer and unfortunately I could not.

So guys I really need some convincing that Verizon is worth the $100/mo. I'm also thinking about applying for a job with them which I know will knock some money off my bill each month but that's not why lol.

I want to be on the best network despite it being CDMA. I don't think by next year AT&T will have their LTE matched and even if they do I'll be throttled in my unlimited plan.

I just left "A Suck & Suck" a few months ago due to connectivity issues and horrible dropped calls. Verizon does cost a few bucks more a month but for the service I get with them, it's worth it to me. Not to mention I grab the LTE. I'd say give them a try before you drop A Suck & Suck. You do have 14 days and you can walk away without being locked into a contract.

AT&T is not bad for me. However, I don't like having an unlimited plan and being throttled. I think Verizon is more future proof if that makes sense. I think overall they are a better company.

A little nervous getting the G Nexus after reading so many people complain about issues? My biggest concern is the signal issue and switching between 3G and 4G. The latest update is supposedly coming so that makes me feel a little better. I also don't like putting Volume+ on my phone to increase the speaker volume. Though I used that app with the HTC Sensation and it worked great.

Btw, is there a 4G toggle? I know you can go into settings and turn it off, but I was wondering if there is a widget for it?

I just got the GN a few days ago, so I'm in my learning curve. I used the Razr, but it was too wide for my liking. I'm not sure about the widget for 4G, but I'm sure there is one. Maybe someone can point you (us) in the right direction.
