Well, I don't know about the leaked version, I'm on the rooted 2.1, but I would think it's probably the same. If you go to Settings-Text-to-Speech, you first have to select "Install voice data". Once that installs the other options become available to you.

Now, so far the only place I've have tried to use this is in Handcent. You press and hold on a particular message and you will get the options to save, delete, etc. Towards the bottom it will say speak text (I believe). Select this and it will read it to you.

Every single text area in Android 2.1 is speech-to-text enabled, which means you can say your text messages, emails, tweets, notes to self, whatever.

It works like Google's voice-enabled search box does. You tap the microphone button on the keyboard, speak, and then the spinner grinds away at the recording, translating it to text.

from Android 2.1’s Best Features in Screenshots - Nexus one - Lifehacker

so where is this voice to text? I know I can have messages read back to me but text fields are supposed to be voice activated so to speak so I can dictate while driving etc.

so where is it?

Oh, Ok. Have you tried the Voice search option under the Navigator app? The whole navigator layout looks like the docked Droid interface. It has a Footprints link, Navigation, Voice Search, View Map, Search and make a call.

Also, I just found, that if you just press teh serch soft key, it pulls up the quick search box that also have a microphone icon at the end. If you press this it also opens the voice search. You get a little box with a mcrophone and it says speak now.

Hope this helps. I really haven't played with this too much yet.

yeah i know about the voice search, not what i meant, but thanks

Don't know if any of you have tried it, but the brand new 2.1 leak that CrackMonkey91 posted the other day actually has resolved quite a few of the issues that you and others are talking about. It appears to be a much more solid version. Not OTA worthy, but definitely better. Just an FYI. :D

Ok, well after reading your posts again without working at the same time, I realized I was basically repeating what you just told me. :o

So far the only place I found where you can speak your message was in Handcent. They have a microphone icon when you press the menu soft key while composing a message. Other than that I couldn't find anything, and I'm using Ivan's 0.5.4. I think the abilty is there, but we need either the Nexus One's keyboard which has the microphone key, or the apps need to incorporate it like Handcent. I'll look around over at XDA to see if anyone has any ideas. I think this feature would be very useful to a lot of people.

I'm also working on learning how to cook ROMs, so if nothing else, if I can't find it maybe I can make it. :D

your right, most issues are corrected but two big ones remain. the phone call bug where parties speaking to each other cant hear one another . the other is Bluetooth problem. Eris can pair device and we can actually use Bluetooth device for awhile but after a reboot or shutting down Bluetooth and activating it will cause Eris not to be able to pair. other than those issues which do not happen often, devise is vastly improved in terms of performance....

Interesting. I do not have issues with either of these. Not on the first leak or the second. I have heard others talk about the silent phone call bug, but this is actually the first I am hearing of a bluetooth bug. I have 5 different bluetooth devices and haven't had an issue with any of them.

What bluetooth devices are you guys/girls using?

I dont have neither problem... my headset(jawbone 2, and my mitsubishi Outlander pairing got better with 2.1) pairs at all times, and all parties can hear me at all times... strange. Maybe its a compatibility issue with your headset and the 2.1?

I have a Jawbone Prime and have not had any problems works flawlessly. Sometime I think its all the luck of the draw because these problems seem so varied. Makes you think it is dependent on what you have loaded and how it interacts with your device.

Been lurking for sometime but now that I finally got OTA 2.1 update I joined to post this :) Been pretty sweet so far, except...

I cannot seem to add a speed dial. I go into phone menu -> speed dial, add new, select contact, choose number and position, and save.

when I press the number (2 or 3 in the cases I tried) it does not dial.

I have power cycled phone since update and still no effect. I had numbers assigned to speed dials 2-9 previously. holding 1 still dials voicemail for me.

Well it was on topic at least :D Now that there's a sticky for new 2.1 findings I'll try there.

And thanks so much to you though - you could have given me help...but you gave me so much more :o
