I use auto for day shots, and either manual or tweaked for night shots.

My sharpness is still at -1, and I sometimes put saturation up half a tic.

Some pics from our trip to Pittsburgh to visit family. All pics taken on auto. The brighter pic of the bridge was shot using HDR and the pic of the back of my son was taken just after dusk and touched up with Aviary.

You should try those shots again in HDR. That has really improved since the last software update. That last picture taken in HDR would have showed all the detail in the sky as well as the trees. In auto the trees and landscape are always pretty much black.
