Post Photos Taken With Your M9!

Just curious why you went negative on the EV? That would only make the scene darker.

In HDR and Night modes, you cannot change any settings, at least on the Verizon M9. Ant the -0.5 EV is my go to for day time shots. I did play around with it though, and bumping it up made little difference.

I get that -0.5 for day shots but not for night shots because they make them darker than they already are. If anything it should be +0.5 EV or higher.

Having used the S6 as well, there is no contest. The M9's camera is not even in the same league. Daylight shots has the potential to be good, but getting the right exposure is tricky with HTC's camera app. But Night/lowlight shots are just not good. I think MKBHD's review pretty much sums it up for me.

If only a smartphone was just about a sub feature of a feature. Yes. The S6 smokes the M9 in night shots. I really can't tell the difference in the daylight photos and the S6 has it's warts in other areas like memory leaks and bad battery life etc. No phone is perfect but the M9 has taken an undue pounding in the tech world. It is just piling on at this point. I know the phone camera has it's limitations but in day to day use for 2 weeks now because of the intuitive manual controls that don't even have to be saved because they stay there even after re-starts I haven't had a problem with stills. I use HDR for night shots and even the video has improved, though it is still a weak point. The flash which I don't really use has improved as well with updates and the camera post processing will continue will future updates. I also like storing all my photos on a SD card as opposed to internally for a number of reasons and you can't do that with an S6 because that option isn't available.

I'll try and take the same picture again tonight with a higher EV, but keep in mind it has no effect in night and HDR modes.

Are these taken with an M9 or S6?

If you change the settings before putting it in HDR mode it saves the settings you used.

All taken on M9 on Auto mode. Since the thread title is "Post Photos Taken With Your M9!", i didn't want to post any S6 shots even if it was just for comparisons.

I know that's only a small sample but those pictures just fine to me... even the ones taken at night.

I actually really liked the last night one. I know the sky probably didn't really look like that, but it looks kinda cool to me.

Not on the Verizon version then. I just tried in HDR and put in the following settings before switching to HDR: ISO200 and ISO1600. The pictures are identical. The settings make no difference once you switch to HDR.

Oh. I wasn't sure if it'd make a difference in the outcome. Just noticed on mine if I switched the ISO before turning on HDR the ISO setting remained. I haven't tried one on HDR then with ISO preset with HDR.

So here is a RAW photo. First is the .jpg saved by the phone and the second is the .dng edited by me. Now keep in mind these are the same photo, but the .dng photo captured more (height of the photo; notice the sky). Also, I am not a professional editor in anyway. I tried to make everything look more real to life in terms of color, but while the result is different, I'm not sure if it's better.

Here is the unedited .jpg that the phone saves while shooting in RAW.

Here is the .dng that I edited.

Played around with RAW a bit more.

.jpg saved by the phone

.dng converted to .jpg from a photo editing program with no adjustments made. I believe the .jpg saved by the phone undergoes processing where as this photo did not.

Thanks. On my tablet the dng derived images have a blue hue while the original jpg has a neutral tint and what appears to be the more natural contrast. but that can vary from screen to screen.

The unedited .dng looks the most blue on my screen followed by the one that I edited where I did increase the blue just a bit to bring out the sky.

On a small size, they look fine. But when you zoom in a little, you see the lack of details, the blotchy post processing, and the graininess of the image. Daylight shots are not too bad other than colour reproduction being a little poorer than the S6. But lowlight shots are pretty bad compared with the S6, and the lack of OIS certainly did not help at all.

Just look at the image at 50% crop. (no point going 100% since no one actually zooms in that much) when viewing normally.

M9:

S6:

But in the end everyone has different needs and preferences from a phone. For social media and viewing on phones, the images looks okay to me too.

The sky did actually look like that. It was very early in the morning and the sun was just starting to rise.

I still prefer having to deal with that M9 night zoom shot I would rarely use in comparison to having to navigate through that abomination known as Touchwiz 100% of the time I use the S6. If they could have dialed back the pastel colours and refined the UI more I would have actually leaned towards it.

You have to take in account that the m9's noise will look exaggerated vs the s6 in this shot because it's zoomed in... Not saying the noise isn't prevalent... Just exaggerated

Can anyone compare pics from the M9 to the Nexus 6?

I'm good with the Nexus 6 camera, so if the M9 can compare, I'd be plenty happy with it.

I was actually playing around with Camera FV-5 this weekend and found that pictures I took with it had way less noise when I zoomed in 100% as opposed to the HTC Camera app. I noticed this because the pictures on the wall and on the coffee table in my living room were all blurry on HTC App zoomed in 100% but I could make out what they were on the FV-5 app zoomed 100% even though in both cases it was a picture of the whole room itself. I think it is because of FV-5's auto focus before capture feature. It makes for less blurry photos in general and greater detail when you zoom in even though you may think the photos look the same at first blush between the two app photos. I am hoping HTC can fix their auto focus in a future update.
