No problem, you're not being dumb. We all start somewhere. I used uccw. I took a picture, cropped it small around the part of the picture I wanted, opened up uccw with a widget size 2x2, set the image as the background, added a layer that was labeled shape 1, went to style, selected hollow circle, selected effects as see through, and made the circle big enough to create a circle around the image.
