Hello,

I am in the market for a reliable verified power bank that can be ordered online. I have my eyes on the xiaomi pro 10000 mAh, but I don't know too much about the brand so I am not sure. If you can suggest some that you use with your Nexus 5x, I would really appreciate it. (I don't need more than 10000mAh) Also, USB A or USB C?

Thanks a bunch

I tend to buy cheap. I have a Sony that's flat, easy to carry in my little daypack, and will charge my Nexus 5x twice. I have also charged my Kindle with the little power pack. Works great for phone and Kindle. The short cable from the power pack to the device is a USB A to USB-micro and I have a tiny USB-micro to USB C adapter. It all works fine for me. To charge my power pack I use one of my leftover USB-micro wall chargers. I could be wrong but I think the power pack charges my Kindle faster than it charges from a power outlet.

A few months ago, Amazon had a great sale on a much larger power pack. I wanted one for my sister to use to charge her laptop so I bought two. The one I got worked great but it was too big and heavy. it would charge my phone maybe five times but I don't need that so I gave it to a friend who travels the world with an IPad.

Yeah RavPower and Anker seem to be safe bets, but they are pretty expensive and as far as I can tell are not USB C friendly?

The RAVPower and Anker have a USB-C input/output. You can charge the battery over C or your phone.

I bought the PowerCore+ 20100 mAh about half a year ago and it works great except for the cable which is a surprisingly poor quality, so I also bought this universal cable and I'm pretty much all set with all my devices while travelling.

Monoprice pushed their power bank's availability back to end of September, so I started looking around. Decided to order the Tronsmart Presto 10400mAh after finding a bunch of positive reviews. One oddity - all the reviews are for a 12000mAh version, but all of the review links point to this 10400mAh product.. I'll provide some feedback later in the week after I get a chance to mess with it.

nice that looks pretty small and not expensive, keep us updated

The Tronsmart Presto 10400mAh arrived today. I charged it up and then hooked it up to my 5X. The fun part about USB C is finding out whether or not your accessories like each other or not. I've had different cables operate differently with different chargers. So, you really have to use an app like Ampere to see what termination is recognized and what the charging rate really is rather than rely upon the dummy light saying "fast charging".

Cable #1 - LG Type C to C that came with the 5X wall charger: battery bank and cable recognized for max 1500mA...so no 2.4 to 3A output rates. Quickly negotiated to 1300mA and then up to ~1500mA after a couple of minutes.

Cable #2 - RAVPower Type C to C: Same deal. 1500mA max. Saw 1100mA then up in the 1430mA range.

Cable #3 - RAVPower braided A to C: For grins, I connected this A to C cable to the other port. 1450mA max. Started low ~320mA and negotiated up to ~1410mA.

I left the third cable connected and measured the charge % over time. Started at 56% and saw a little under 1%/min up to 90%.

So, not a 3A output device, but still good for 50% charge in under an hour.

For grins, I ordered another C to C cable just for another interoperability datapoint.

Does anyone have a portable charger that meets these criteria?
  1. Small and light (not large and heavy)
  2. Takes USB-C and charges the Nexus 5x rapidly
  3. Doesn't require you to press button before charging to charge the phone (versus charging the portable charger)

The Aukey braided C to C cable arrived and connected it between my 5X and the Tronsmart bank. The connection was recognized as 3A capable and the power bank negotiated up to a 2250mA output before settling back down to about 2A.

I've ordered the Monoprice 10000mAh power bank..it'll arrive later this week.

Tested the Monoprice today with the same three Type C to C cables. Best case was 2.2A max and 2A average with the Aukey cable...even though it claims 3A on the back of the device.

I just got this. It's both type A and C. Power can flow either way with the type C port so I can both charge my 5X or use the 5X charger to charge this rapidly. Awesome!
