Or can you tell me how to remove the Chinese message which pops up every time I try to phone

Welcome to Android Central! It's likely that since the phone was intended for the Chinese market, some system messages will remain in Chinese (even if you've already changed the system language to English). Have you tried taking a screenshot of that message and using Google Translate (or a friend who can read Chinese) to tell you what the message says?

Chances are that an English manual for the phone wouldn't tell you much about that message that's popping up.
