A few months ago I downloaded and installed a pre rooted version of the official Froyo update to the Samsung Epic 4G which was made available through Android Central. Here is that link:

I was wondering if there is a pre rooted version of the official Gingerbread update out or in the works, or if I have to restore unrooted Froyo, do the OTA update for Gingerbread, and then root afterwards. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Two choices...

Flash a fairly stock version of official GB in CWM and save yourself some headaches..

Before you do, use Titanium Back or My Backup Root from the Market to save your data, then you can do a DATA ONLY restore once your back up on GB. Also SMS Backup and Restore from the Market will handle your SMS/TXT's very nicely....

[ROM]Mostly Stock EI22 | Update 4 11/12

or Odin back, Procedure #1

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Then do the manual update/OTA and root your phone again...

Almost the same question, I remember flashing a froyo from eclair update and all my apps and settings stayed - is there a way to do the samething from froyo to GB?

With that being said:

I have about 83mb in "User Cache", will flashing an almost stock rom erase "User Cache"? I ask because when I use a program called "Smart Monitor", it usually shows my "User Cache" as 0mb used, but ever since my popups started for me to update to GB it shows 83mb used.

I never downloaded anything from Sprint because I always said no to the update, but my popups says install now or install later, so it seems it might have been a forced background download.

So if I flash a new rom, will this clear that "User Cache" that contains that 83mb file(s) or can I clear that 83mb manually somehow.

Not too sure about the User Cache. Most likely when you flash a new ROM or update OTA/manually that cache would be reset (don't quote me there, not positive).

As far as the update from Froyo to GB with retaining data via a custom ROM, then there is one ROM that may retain your data...

[ROM]ACS ICS v4(noCiQ)11/14/11[EI22] (this has a auto backup in place.) When flashing this ROM you don't do any wipes before flashing in CWM and it retains your data for you.

Hope this helps.
