Presidential Text Messages?

The more I think about it...

This won't tell the feds anything that Google, Apple and MasterCard don't already know. The privacy ship has sailed.

How is this a bad idea?

It's a bad idea for two reasons. First, I don't want unsolicited ANYTHING being sent to my phone! Second, whenever the federal government mandates anything you can bet your buttocks that there will be "mission creep"!

I'm no tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, but the thought of the feds mandating manufacturers install chips in any device for any reason puts up red flags in my mind. There are just too many ways that this technology can be co-opted for nefarious purposes.

I don't really see the point in this...we're all going to die on Saturday. :P

Seriously though, I don't understand why people are so worried about "The Government." Google knows more than they do. Even if they track me, I'd rather them do that then be going about my business and miss out that there is a tornado or flood, or terrorist attack going on that I'd prefer to avoid. Lesser of two evils.

Yeah like it hasnt already. As the previous poster said. The privacy ship has sailed, there is n po thimg ,uch left to do bit ride what is left of the wave.

That's right. The privacy ship has sailed so let's just allow them to do what ever they want without complaint. Doesn't sound like the American way to me.

The problem I have isn't really how the technology will be used, but rather, that the feds are mandating private companies install something in their product that they themselves saw no market for. If the public wanted such a feature, we would have asked for it.

I did ask for it and now The Weather Channel text messages keep reminding me every 7 minutes about severe weather. The same warning every time. Be careful what you ask for.

Amen. The government can just buy data on you from Google.

I'm sorry but it strikes me that this is only an issue when the demmy-crat is president. Anyone ever hear of the Patriot Act?

To me it's the same as requiring the television and radio stations to accommodate the alerts.

I don't care for it, regardless of what party is in power. Let me opt in, fine. Force it on me, I don't care for it.

Surprised at the responses from people who remove bloatware from Verizon ("It's my phone, I bought it and can do what I want to it") but will agree to a chip that you cannot touch being put in.

If my phone is off, what good does a message do me? Better still, help the economy, let the government buy the data from Google.

Pretty soon babies will have rfd chips implanted in them.

The europeanization of America continues.

Except for the little annoying truth that you can choose to turn off the radio or tv and not have to listen to or see the messages. No such escape with our phones.

As the previous poster said, I'm amazed at the response here. I really thought this was a site full of rebels that wanted to unchain their phones from the bloat the carriers force on us, etc. Now to see that just about everyone who responded has no problem with this intrusion. Oh well, live and learn.

This has nothing to do with politics. I never went down that road, but you felt the need to. I don't give a rodents buttocks who's in office when it comes to stuff like this! I'm not a political ideologue, I'm a freedom loving patriot who actually believes that the Constitution says what it says and isn't open to just any interpretation.

Be my guest and enjoy your alert messages. As for me, and I hope a large number of devs, we'll figure a way to disable this foolishness.

You don't have to answer your phone and can turn that off, too. But I definitely do see your point. I just don't personally have a problem with this particular issue if it's used for emergency purposes only.

In college I took several classes on emergency management and it's a big issue for people in that field to be able to reach everyone in an emergency. So many times people don't get the information they need to evacuate or otherwise protect themselves in an emergency. I think in some parts of the country local governments may use robocalls or reverse 911 systems to contact every household (with a phone anyway) in case of emergency. So if the levee breaks, it's critical that officials reach as many people as possible. If my TV or radio isn't on I wouldn't know about it. It's a tough balance between safety and privacy. In this case I'm on the side of safety in an emergency. That's my point of view on it.

Here is an interesting example (although an unsuccessful one) of trying to reach people due to a toxic cloud issue.
