Prevent automatic Wi-Fi connection

I know this has been asked repeatedly but I have not found an answer. My new ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe, like my Nexus 6 before it, connects to xfinitywifi at every opportunity. And without regard for signal strength.

This is a real nuisance when driving because by GPS (Waze) stops each time due to very poor signal strength. So I have to turn off Wi-Fi to resume navigation. And of course this usually happens at the most inopportune time, resulting in missed turns. I have tried to "Forget" xfinitywifi but it always seems to get restored.

Seems like common sense to provide the option whether to automatically connect to each saved AP, or at least all AP's.

The problem with turning off Wi-Fi manually (after missing a turn) is of course remembering to turn it back on before getting data limit warnings.

Am I missing something? Is there a setting or way (app) to add this functionality?

Unfortunately the ability to set a specific WiFi connection to auto-connect or not is only present in Nougat, so for other versions you'll have to do things differently. Are the WiFi spots you're getting connected to 'open'? If so, have you checked to see if your phone's WiFi settings aren't set to auto-connect to open WiFi networks (an option you should disable for security anyway)?

What about an XFinity app on your phone? Maybe that's prompting the connection. I don't know if XFinity is affiliated with any carrier, but for some time, for instance, ATT phones would connect automatically and without giving any option to ATT WiFi hotspots...
