Problem transfering iTunes music using File Transfer (Mac) to Moto G

I killed 30 minutes fighting with my Moto G and my iMac trying to move music files from iTunes to the phone. (I own the music, so DRM is not the problem.) Every time I tried, I got a message to reconnect the device, cannot copy, etc...

I suspect the problem is that I got it to work once, then disconnected the phone BEFORE closing File Transfer on the computer. This deleted the music folder on the phone altogether. I did just make another, but I'm not exactly sure where the file goes. Does it go on the top level, or in the media folder.

Any help is appreciated...
