Problem transferring texts from S9+ to S21 Ultra

Ok sounds like a plan .

I did a full factory reset and restored from SmartSwitch on PC like you recommended. I was hoping it would be identical to what I did Thursday on my initial setup, but not quite. I may do it again tomorrow to see if my texts might get fixed. There has to be a setting somewhere...

But it was also a little different because my phone was partially set up in order to get to the Smart Switch - I had to log in before I got to that step...

Ok try again tomorrow let's see , hopefully it fixes it .

So I checked and changed settings on old phone and made Samsung messages the default... all texts were correct...then I made a new backup. I factory reset and restored and my calendar is fixed but my texts are not. Think I'm giving up...

It's doing the correct thing with stock message app but something up with Textra for some reason , try one thing , download Google message app and see if same issue?

Can't imagine it will be different... But I'll try anything at this point!

You realize that even in the stock app on the new phone my texts are messed up, right?

It's the same thing - the thread with my daughter only has images and her texts are in a group thread that she is a part of

No , thought it was ok , but ok thanks for pointing it out , have tried the Google message app?
That's the weird part...on my old phone where I was using Textra I can go back and forth from any messaging app with no issues, but no matter how I transfer the messages to the new phone they are messed up in every app I have tried.

Do you have RCS enabled? If so, AFAIK backup and transfer of RCS messages can only occur if you're using Google Messages. This is an Android wide issue not just Samsung.

The SMS Backup and Restore developer has a doc on their support site discussing this.

Most of my individual threads are ok. Definitely the ones going back a little. It's only threads I've used since around Jan 20 going forward that are wonky

I don't think so... Unless it was turned on as a default without me realizing. Where would I check?

I've also never used Google messages before & I think that's the only app that supports rcs

One more piece of data...any spam texts that I blocked /blacklisted are back in my conversations list...

Yeah thats the issue as it works on that phone, it's the transfer which is the problem.
I can give you one more thing to try and if it doesn't work something happened with the transfer for whatever reason.

On your s9 go to account and backup in settings

Make a Samsung back up there but make sure your sign into your Samsung account on the phone.

Next go to s21 and sign into same Samsung account and go to settings> accounts and back up not choose restore and should see your s9 as a option and highlight just texts to restore and see what happens.

Otherwise in account and back up on the s9 but do it on the sd card , then take it out and put sd card in the s21 and account and back up restore from sd card the messages.

Hopefully one of these works , if not I'm not sure what else to suggest.

I'll look into the Samsung backup - didn't know that existed...

Without resetting my phone again, unless there is a way to delete the messages currently on my phone or find an app that will overwrite the existing data, I believe it is something inherent in the S21...

Actually, it doesn't exist... I'm on Verizon and Samsung cloud is unavailable. And I've already tried multiple variations in smart switch.

But that also seems exactly the same as using Google drive or Dropbox, both of which I've done using SMS backup and restore

Unfortunately, Google backup is only available when you first set up your phone. And you can't access pieces of it
