Cute kiddies, phil! Mine is jacked up. Human voice okay. But background noise like the loud tv barely registers from just a few feet away.

Here is a sample in youtube, sound is good. For me is working ok, not sure how it will be in a room with more people talking.

YouTube - HTC ThunderBolt 720p HD Video Sample

Read the comments on that video, they are all mocking the sound quality. They also point out that the guy doing the recording was holding the phone right next to his mouth in order for his voice to be heard.

This is not a deal breaker for me, but I sure would like it to be fixed before my next family get together.

I've transferred it to my pc and it's still quite terrible. It's as if the sound is muted. The audio recording levels are extremely low -- it's not the playback.

Ditto here. Sounds the same on my computer as it does on my phone.....barely audible at full volume.

Just curious, but I was trying to record my guitar amp to test the sound quality and it was laying face down on my bed recording and it was extremely muffled sounding when I listened to it in my car using the headphones jack. I realize this isn't the best way to position the phone, but where is the Mic exactly and where do you guys think I should put the phone to record?

It's the tiny pin hole at the bottom of the phone.

I thought that was bad placement on HTC's part, because IF we ARE EVER ABLE to do video calls in portrait mode with the kickstand the phone is sitting on top of the mic.

But as it turns out my fears are unfounded, because the mic does work anyway!!!! :(

I have been trying to reach out to HTC to address this issue, here was the response....

my suggestion is to turn off the phone, remove the battery for 20 seconds, replace and turn the phone back on. If this does not fix the problem, you will need to perform a factory reset.

Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It?ll permanently delete all your data and
customized settings, and will remove any applications you?ve downloaded and installed. Be sure to
back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset using HTC Sync.

Performing a factory reset via settings
Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings.
Tap SD & phone storage > Factory data reset.
On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone, and then tap Erase everything.

If this does not resolve the issue contact Verizon repairs: PCD US, 1-800-229-1235 (8:30 AM - 5
PM EST M-F).

I clearly stated to the issue and that I tried multiple demo phones at the VZ store with all the same problem. But they provide some generic email response. I have no idea at this point if they have acknowledged an issue with this or intend on fixing it. I will update you all with any new information I receive.

In the mean time please keep trying to work with verizon and htc for a resolution, power in numbers!

S.O.P. - Do two reboots and call me in the morning.

In other words, they don't know what the heck the problem is and they are stalling....OR they DO KNOW what it is and they don't know how to fix it without doing a recall.

I just went to the verizon store in santa barbara and their phones had the same issue. The employee told me he was going to fill out a form and inform HTC the problem.

Oh boy, a form. That'll do the trick. ;)

Thank God for Youtube and social media, the word gets out a lot faster than a "form" ever could.

Sounds like it's working for Phill. Mine is almost no volume, only can here if you are right next to phone.

Should I try to get another phone to see if it works?

Guys,

I just tested few more times and it is really really bad. I am going to the store tomorrow to see what they have to say.
