Problem with connection via phone wifi hotspot

Just got my Nexus 7 (wifi only) and would like to be able to connect to web using my Galaxy phone as a wifi hotspot when there is no alternative.

I have switched on "Portable WiFi hotspot" on the phone and the Nexus shows my phone as connected under wifi connections, but I have no web connection. What have I missed?
