Problem with Gmail App and category inbox tabs

I use the Gmail inbox category tabs (Promotions, Social and Updates). I recently switched to android and have been using the Gmail app. I noticed I don't get notifications when I receive a new email that gets sorted to one of the category tabs. Is this normal? I do get a notification when new emails arrive in the primary inbox, just not the categorized ones.

You have to set the notifications for every label. In the Gmail app go to settings - manage labels - select one - check the notifications box.
