Problem with new battery

My X2 is now two years old. It's running on the stock version of Gingerbread and has never been rooted. I've been holding off on getting a new phone until I see what the rumored Moto X phones really have to offer. In the mean time, my phone's battery seems to be about worn out. I got a new Motorola branded battery for it (stock size). However, this battery acts odd.

I'll charge the phone to full. After 3-4 hours of being removed from the charger with light use, it will be down to about 20-40% charge. If I power off the phone and power it back on, it will say it has a 90% charge. After 3 more hours, it will again be down to about 20-40%. If I power cycle it again, it will come back at about 70%. I've been reading threads and articles (ex. Wiping battery stats doesn't improve battery life, says Google engineer | Android Central) that say that the batterystats.bin file is automatically wiped each time the phone is fully charged. Still, there has to be something going on. Either there is just something wrong with this battery (possible, I guess) or something is going on where my phone is remembering the capability of my old, worn out battery and adjusting the battery % display accordingly.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to resolve this? Thanks!

You say the battery is "Motorola branded." Where did you get the battery from? Most of the "official" batteries from places like ebay or Amazon 3rd party vendors are counterfeits.
