Problem with using earbud headphones with calls

I have a set of standard earbud headphones that I use with my Nexus 4. The issue (which may have started after the 4.2.2 upgrade) is that if I have the earbuds in and I either receive a call or go to make a call the audio is routed to the handset instead of the earbuds. Once I am in the call if I unplug the earbuds and plug them back in the call audio is then routed to the earbuds.
Anyone else experience this, or even better have a solution? As I said I'm not sure when it started but may have been with the 4.2.2 upgrade.
The Nexus is running stock.
