Problem with Win XP ADB driver

Hi folks,

Forgive this post if this has been covered elsewhere. If so just point me in the right direction.

I'm fairly technically able, have experience rooting and using custom roms from my bionic. However, this one has me stumped. I've been trying for awhile, but for the life of me I can't seem to get Win XP to properly load the Samsung ADB driver. I've tried every conceivable option of installing/uninstalling Kies, all drivers, reinstalling just drivers, you name it. Now, Win can see the phone for mass storage purposes, but nothing that uses ADB. Anyone out there have any ideas - please don't suggest a Windows upgrade, not gonna happen, at least not in the foreseeable future. Currently the ADB driver is listed in Device Manager with the dreaded exclamation point next to it. Tried Koush's universal ADB driver, still no luck. Would love to root and unlock this phone! Thanks in advance for your replies. :)

Just on the off chance, did you try with and without USB Debugging? Kies has the driver repair feature, again likely you checked that out.

This is what I used to root and unlock my Note 2 (Windows 7 virtual machine). There are some USB troubleshooting tips that may help. Sounds like you've probably covered all of these, but just in case...

Edit: Sorry, just reread the XDA post again in detail. Looks like XP is not supported. The driver troubleshooting tips may still be relevant.

Thanks for the reply. And no, did not know about driver repair in Kies. Will try that and disable debugging and report back.

Yes have looked over at XDA. That's what I want to run also!

Alright here's the latest - I believe something got screwed up in one of my attempts to root/unlock with Adam's xda casual. I had set up a virtual Linux system and tried that route, but Casual only made it half way through and then said kernel not recognized (???). I have now loaded kies and drivers on another machine and although the drivers are listed correctly in Device Manager, the phone is not recognized in Kies, but Windows sees it for file transfer purposes. Tried driver repair didn't help. So, I'm in the process of downloading alternate restore file from xda and will reset phone to stock out of the box, even though I haven't been able to root or unlock.

Linux VM is a good option. Might want to post to the XDA thread and see if anyone has thoughts on the kernel issue.

Unfortunately Kies is hit or miss. It has been a no go on my wife's Windows 8 system for her Note 2 (unrooted and unlocked), and the same for me with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and in my Windows 7 VM. I had Kies working great with my S3 and Mac. Think Samsung has been struggling big time with Kies.

If you can get a stock, rooted and unlocked going with Odin that sounds like your best option. Hope you get it figured out :)
