Problems adding gmail to Samsung mail app

I have been having problems adding gmail to the mail app. The mail app says unable to verify account information. The server imap.gmail.com is not responding etc, this happens when I try to add any of my gmail accounts, however. I can access them through the gmail app on the phone. I just want to use the Samsung email app to see emails etc. Please help
