Problems setting up ChromeCast in new location

I have a older Chromecast ( it’s the “stick” type not the round version.)

This works well at home but I’m now trying to use it in a new location but cannot get it to connect.

I’ve done a factory reset on it and a router reset .

I’ve followed various instructions using Google Home which then diverts me to Device Utility: by following this I can connect to the ChromeCast’s wi-fi but then cannot see how to connect the Chromecast to my router.

My Tv shows chromecast 4562 but I cannot see how to get any further,,

All help gratefully received.

Is the router you're trying to connect to set up for older 2.4GHz connections? If you try to connect it to the 'older' location, does it still connect? Does the new router allow new connections (like your phone if you aren't previously joined)?

Hi,
thank you for your suggestions.
My connection, in the new location, is to a dedicated sim card hotspot (that is, not a hot spot via a mobile). I don't know how to interrogate this to establish its type of 2.4G... i'll have a Google.
I cannot try the ChromeCast in the original location until I get home from holiday... in a week or so.
Yes, I can add additional phones, laptops etc to the hot-spot.

Does the Chromecast 'see' the new network and just can't connect, or it doesn't even 'see' it? If the latter, chances are the router isn't set up for 2.4GHz.

Hi,

my phone says it is connected as 2.4GHz to the portable hotspot.

When I use Device utility it advises me to turn off phone wi-fi then connect to the Chromecast ( by wi-fi). When I do this it connects ok but says that the Chromecast connections does not have Internet connection.... this is where I am stuck, I cannot see how to connect to the hot-spot.

I'm not sure what 'Device utility' is, but when the Chromecast is not connected (try hard-resetting it) and near your phone, adding a new Chromecast device on your phone should prompt you (Home app), step by step, on where to connect and when to connect directly to the Chromecast. That being said, support for that generation of Chromecast was dropped last year, so I wonder if the Home app just doesn't recognize it anymore?

I would also make sure your phone isn't set up to automatically switch WiFi networks if it doesn't detect a data connection (sometimes this interferes with WiFi-Direct connections for set up as the phone drops the connection mid-transaction to look for one with internet access).

After a hard reset of the ChromeCast and a reboot of the hotspot.
Using Home, directs me to use the Device Utility for "further activation steps".
Following these enables me to log-on to the Chrome Cast but without any Internet access.

I shall check the auto-switch setting

If you have another mobile device that could be used as a hotspot just to test (or a different router around), can you try to connect it to that ? If that works, then the mobile hotspot is the issue. Are you sure the hotspot you're trying to connect to doesn't need an additional login page? Chromecast doesn't support this (hotels, dorms, coffeeshops, managed networks, etc.).
