Problems typing periods (Android)

I just got a new phone and had trouble entering a period while typing. Sometimes I had to tap the period key 2-3 times for a period to appear.

Autocorrect was always off.

I went to Google Keyboard settings and turned off "Double space for period" and also "Gesture Typing." Seems to be okay now.

These settings should NOT have been on by default! Most people are going to enter a period or space the usual ways. That has to be the stupidest default ever. Most new users are going to not see the periods appearing, and won't know why.

I hope to God that most Androids are set up this way, are they? (I have a Moto E Gen 2 with Android 5.1.)

These are the default options on all keyboards I've used, stock and 3rd party. The period, however, should work as long as you tap on it once. If you hover over it with Gesture Typing on, then it might misinterpret it. And you can always insert a space without the period as long as it's one space (which is what the majority of texts require).

If you look at what happened to me, I think it's silly that these are the defaults.

I know I was hitting the period key since something appeared each time I hit it, as with all keys.

In the Gmail app I had to press Period three times for one Period to appear. Why did that happen??
It's not happening now but I'd like to know.

Just to clarify: if Gesture and "double space for periods" are both ON, then tapping the period should always make a period appear, is that right?

Correct. And it shouldn't be an issue in theory unless you long press on the period (which should pop up extended punctuation) or tap and kinda swipe over it (this would have to be a longer-than-the-key swipe, mind you).
