I see some stuff about this, but not a lot and am wondering how common it is.

When the brightness is low, when I press the power/home button the phone responds as normal, but the display doesn't turn on, sometimes there's a green flash but it stays off. And it seems to be getting worse very gradually, requiring more brightness to not screw around with me.

Also it flickers if the brightness is too low.

Is this normal? Is it really getting worse over time? Is it unique to Galaxy s5 or amoled in general? My phone is otherwise working fine but it looks like I'm going to have to replace it in the next few months at this rate.

I've tried with both and it makes no difference, still flickers at low brightness and display still doesn't turn on sometimes when the brightness is low.

Dial *#0*# to get into service mode and check the hardware there. If it fails, it's hardware, if it passes, it's software.
The other thing I'd do is cache partition wipe... This unclutters the device and just generally speeds it up..
