Problems with Google Play updates

My N5 is up to date. I find that when I do an "Update All" that some items in the list don't update, not because they are skipped, but because the download fails.

It appears that the culprit is BitDefender AV, which checks after installation. If an update is in progress during that period, it may time out and fail. The same thing happens if Clean Master checks during updates.

Are others encountering the same problem? Is the best fix to nuke the AV?

Do you know for sure that the problem goes away if you uninstall the antivirus program?

These days, you can get away with not having antivirus installed, because Google now scans all apps that you install for viruses as well. Combine that with prudent selection of apps (and their sources), and installing additional antivirus apps becomes superfluous.

My problem is that when there are several large things to update and I tell it "all" and walk away, the phone eventually goes to sleep while downloading and anything left failed because apparently either wifi is suspended or processing stops for some reason. And this is with the "keep wifi on during sleep" turned ON! Very irritating that I should have to stand there and keep touching the screen to keep it awake. Same thing on my N10.

Are you sure that is a function of Google Now?? There is a setting under Security-> Verify apps "disallow or warn before installation of apps that may cause harm" which I think is how Google performs scanning of all apps (even side-loaded ones) when it is turned on, regardless of if you enabled "Google Now" or not (and I have Now off).

I've installed the Comodo Security software, as I was very happy with their internet security package on my PCs.

Having experimented with this for a while, I can say:

1) problem does not go away when I remove AV
2) it took longer to happen, but even after I remove Clean Master the problem continues.

Basically, when I have several app updates and select Update All pretty much every other one fails. After the first update and install, the second update stalls while downloading, and eventually crashes the Play Store app; vanishes from the screen. The pattern continues, and when I restart the Play store app several updates are still waiting. This continues until I get all updates installed.

And ideas?
