Problems with Google Sync after 2.1 update

After installing the Verizon OTA update to 2.1 on my Droid Eris, my phone won't sync with Google. It tries to, and keeps on trying. I noticed that the phone was hot and the battery was being drained at a rapid rate. I get an error message to the effect that "sync is unavailable or experiencing problems and will be back shortly." I finally had to turn off Sync for Google.

Any solutions to this problem?

i also had this problem. after the update, when i went to settings, accounts & sync, i had 2 google accounts, one for gmail and one for youtube, i clicked on the youtube account and then removed the account, that solved the problem for me. apparently the phone was trying to sync with an account that didn't exist.
