Programs running in background

Hello all, I can't say how (Sorry, Incredibly) happy I am with my first Android phone after years of sticking it out with BB. A couple of quick questions (Which to an Android newbie) aren't really answered in the included tips and hints book. Do you need to actively shut down a program when finished or does hitting the home button take you out of it or is there a kind of task manager that I should shut down programs I am no longer using to not load the processor. Is there a more in depth manual as well? Thanks

From what I've read and seen so far (im new to smartphones and android!)

It depends on the program.. some programs let you "exit" them... or you can go into Menu>Settings>Application and see which apps are running and close them manually

HOWEVER.. i've been reading online that the Android system is pretty smart.. and when it's struggling or whatever (if that happens).. it will automatically shut down apps that are running in the background

hey there, and welcome. I came from Blackberry, too, and it was weird at first not shutting down applications. but, in Android, you don't really need to worry about it. The OS is smart and closes applications when it needs to. You can download a task manager so you can shut down apps yourself.

There was a thread about this yesterday and people were saying that the android OS will kill any tasks that are using too much memory automatically.(i may have worded that wrong). But if you are worried about it there are task killer apps apparently.

Thanks for the quick replies. I guess I'LL let Android do its thing. The phone seems fine with the programs running. Just my old BB habits.

I've heard that Advanced Task Killer is quite good. I know a few Droid users who have it and it works well. I believe it's free on the Marketplace.

Don't worry about your application staying open your phone will manage your memory just fine it will close program as needed. Android devices are nothing like BB where you need to manage your memory so your phone will not lock up. And for task managers, I think they cause more problems then they fix, you will not need one.
