Programs Starting Randomly

So I installed the ATK to see how it was. Love it. Freeing up a lot of ram.

The question I have, however, is: why are random programs starting in the background for no reason? Sprint Navigation, Fring, Voice Search: they just randomly start out of no where... They don't show up in the native task manager but the ram shows it's deff running.

Happens with other apps as well.

If someone could answer this I'd be really grateful... I work at a place that I can't take my phone into, so it's left in the car (under safe and careful guard of course)... yesterday when I returned to my car I saw that Sprint Navigation had been on and had used a great amount of my battery throughout the day (according to the battery usage app)... does anyone know why this is? I went into the Sprint Navigation app to see if there was a setting that I could turn off and couldn't find one...

Any ideas?

I don't think it has anything to do with the app itself. It's random as far as when and what. It's really starting to piss me off.

I don't have Navi set to auto kill in case I'm using it; do something else on the phone; and then the screen turns off while it's running in the background when I need it.

Every time I turn on the phone I check to make sure nothing is running and a lot of times something random I never opened is. I wonder if these are running after screen turn off and don't get killed when then phone is in idle. I mean 1 or 2 compared to about everything is better than it was before. It just bothers me that it's doing this.

The memory one isn't working for me. When I hit apply it says failed.

Also I understand why certain apps start up and for what. Things like slacker and navigation shouldn't be for what im doing.

I really like the memory app idea ; do you have any idea why it's saying fail when hit apply? I'm using a preset mode nothing custom.

Let them open, and you don't really need ATK since the phone has a built in task manager. Home the home button to access it.

I know where the native task manager is; the problem is it sucks. It doesn't display all the programs running in the background. It doesn't work right. When you back out of messages it stays open in the background and doesn't show up in the task manager.

With ATK it shows them properly. 60mb of ram is freed up from using it; and, battery life has increased drastically by hours.

I agree. Between using ATK and using the Airplane Mode trick, I am now getting about 14 hours of use.

Just because the apps are showing up in in the task killer and using RAM does not mean they are using battery or any other resources. You should keep them where they are and not use a task killer, as it provides switching between tasks much easier on the battery in the long run. If it's an app you don't use at all, then remove it. If it's a system app, then root and remove it.

Simple as pie!

Well... 4 hours of texting and other stuff on the phone before ATK vs over 8 hours of texting and other stuff.... (and that's with wifi on and literally sitting and texting and messing around with the screen on 90% of the time.)

I am new to Android and trying to learn/understand it.

I understand what you all are saying about how well Android does task management. But noone actually answered the OP question, which I would also like to know.

How did they get open that you didnt launch?

On one hand there are programs that start up because of other actions. For example text messaging: when you get a message it will open up in the background (not showing on the native task manager) and continue to run. This shows the the notification in the bar, etc. For the most part I've left all messaging services and some others I would like to run in the background when being used since I've set my ATK to kill when screen powers off.

Than, on the other hand: I have no idea. (This is where ATK is coming in handy for me). Sprint TV, Amazon Mp3, Sprint Navigation (which hasn't been a problem for me if It's on randomly and running. I disabled auto kill so that I wouldn't lose it in the background if switching to change music and the screen goes off), etc. There is no reason in my mind why these things should be starting up randomly when they haven't been opened previously.

I'm new to Android as well; but, what I've concluded: there is an issue with the program; or, the program is set up to run in the background internally without the option to disable any of these functions. Why, I have no idea. That's why I've been using ATK. I don't like the way the OS handles them and my batter life has reflected and performance is a little quicker without these programs eating up the ram.

I don't want to root my phone just yet; but, I think the memory limiter program would be better than ATK. I would set it just to handle everything I could possible do at once so it would kill the background apps not being in use. (If I gathered the concept of that app correctly).
