proximity sensor and trying to hang up

Hi folks the screen goes blank...how do you make it where it stays on when you try to touch it while on a call?
I couldn't hang up because the screen timed out.

If you tap the power button the screen will light up.

If you press down the home button, the phone will vibrate and light up.

After doing either of those you can hang up.
