Pruning text messages?

Hey folks,
My text message log is starting to get pretty big, and I've noticed that it's causing a significant lag in processing when I open the messaging app (using the default). I'm pretty sure it's because I have hundreds of messages from lots of people sitting in the log. Does anyone know a good way to prune out all messages that are old? For example, deleting all messages that are more than a month old.

Don't know of a good way to do that. Here are the things i did that worked.
1. Delete the whole conversation.
2. install "chompsms". its a much better sms app. now my text history can get up to 200+ and it still opens up instantly. plus you have soooo much more customization in the options. its still not the best, but better than the default one. some people like "handcent" but i like this one better. try them both out, they are both free.
NOTE: if you install one of these apps, you need to disable the notifications in your stock messaging app. otherwise you will get 2 notifications for each sms.

Another vote for handcent here. I love it and all the options for customizing.

None if these responses answer the original question. I use handcent and I am wondering the same thing as th op. Anyone have any suggestions?

The first response answered it. But I will clarify. There is no way to do it without using a 3rd party app or deleting the entire thread. So install either chomp or handcent.

Ummmm. Am I on crack here? Or can you just go to the settings in the messages app and check "delete older messages" and then set a cap on it?

I can do it on my phone, don't know about you guys.

Mine doesn't have that.

I use Handcent and the best program I have found to delete old messages is called Message Cleanup. It allows you to delete all messages older than a certain time, delete everything except the last so many messages or trim all conversations to so many messages. It works really well.

Yeah it's been the best option to date that I've found. With that being said I have a tendency to clear out messages after a day or two anyways since anything important I need to keep comes via email.

1. Download and install Handcent.
2. Customize Handcent
3. Download and install SMS Backup & Restore

You should be good to go!
