Pull the tab marked "PULL" - void your warranty

There are persons on the forum questioning whether this is real... Well, it is. I'm the wife - and I have an email from Motorolla CSR stating that their position is that the warranty is void. However, they do offer that I can send the phone in for them to review, but I was told this would likely just result in a confirmation of the same.

The reason given was this - "You have done physical damage to the phone. Physical damage voids the warranty." Everyone I have spoken to thus far has used this exact same line - Verizon and Motorola are in lock-step on this.

I totally almost pulled the tab. Started to but realized it wasn't coming off easy and figured it might be to get the battery out.

Thank god I didn't pull too hard.

I did the same thing and no I am not stupid. I obviously took it too literally but so did a lot of other people. I spoke with cs and they said if the fcc info is still intact the warranty is not void. If fcc info is disrupted, warranty is void.

TechWhore, where is this FCC info located? Is it a seal or something? Since my X didnt even come with a pull tab, I am assuming just popping the battery with credit card (as I had to do) wouldn't have dislodged/affected this FCC info?

That sucks. You might want to try contacting verizon's ceo office. I've had very good luck in dealing with problems with big companies that way in the past -- consumerist.com usually has their contact info:

Once you contact them they'll generally put you in touch with executive customer support, who will take much better care of you than regular cs.

I tried this with some issues I had with over the phone CS and all I got was the same bad attitude and just as many excuses and pointless explanations.

It sucks that I see this thread. When I got my X on Friday 16th, the battery was just laying there, but not in fully. I took the battery out and saw the PULL, and the do not cut. I started to pull, but when I realized the entire thing was coming out, I stopped immediately.

I then posted a question here and got the do not pull answer, so I was glad I stopped. Now I am wondering whether I pulled too much and may have voided warranty. I may need to check this out.

I don't see how this will fly. There's nothing in the quick guide about the pull tab. When the phone comes with no battery installed and you've got a tab that says "pull" with a score mark that says "do not cut", it makes you think you're supposed to pull hard enough to remove it and the "do not cut" is so you don't put something sharp inside the cavity. Luckily I didn't pull hard enough to damage anything. If they seriously void people's warranties this has got Class Action Lawsuit written all over it.

Does no one use their brain? yes it says pull, but come on? really? didn't anything put 2 and 2 together and think "hey..this is how you remove the battery.." ??? or did people blindly just yank on it thinking a parachute was going to come out??

it's been like this on many many many many phones for like over 15 years now..

no offense to those that pulled it and now have a voided warranty, but really? I didn't even contemplate yanking the thing off because without even putting 1 second of thought into it, I realized thats how you remove the battery.

i bet there's still people that pull their phone from the power cable rather than pull the power cable from their phone.

also the same people who wash their dishes with the phone in their hands..

I'm just saying people seem to have lost their common sense. Like I said, yes it says "Pull", but it doesn't say "Pull off"


With that said, I'm sure Motorola/Verizon will catch huge flak from this and allow people to swap them out. No company likes bad press. Besides, it's not like there's real "physical" damage to the device.. a new pull tab can be put on and probably be sold as CPO to users.

Congrats on being part of humanity that's managed to move forward.

But it does say "Pull" and nowhere does it say "Do not remove". That plus the fact that there's zero documentation on what should be done does create some confusion. Quite honestly, I am still surprised that this glued on plastic piece is the best they could do for battery removal...I guess those who designed it just aren't part of that elite group of humanity.

It's not being "part of an elite group of humanity".. I can think off the top of my head within the last 10 years how many cell phones I've had that had pull tabs to remove the battery. The Palm Pre has a pull tab! so do some of the older Palm Treo's... my old Nokia had it..

No one came on forums or the internet complaining and moaning about it then.. seems like with THIS specific device, everyone is up in arms about it and never realized to not pull it off completely. Yes, the price costs have gone up exponentially and the fact that it voids your warranty is pretty lame, but still.. I guess I'm just curious what people were thinking it was going to do.

HOnestly, I tired to put the battery in first. It was too tight and rather than force it I looked around for documention telling me what to do.

There wasn't anything that came in my box. (ps - the box was wrapped in plastic either). So, at first I thought I was missing the documents.

I did a google search but since I had the phone as soon as it was released nothing popped up.

I gently pulled and half came off. Then I didn't want to leave half of it in there so I took the rest off.

Now I am paranoid that it is getting hot and that something isn't fitting properly.

Oh well, I gave up and its out of sight.

If anyone has a problem, then I will care again.

There is a black piece of plastic covering the battery compartment. It has a white sticker with S/n etc. The weird thing is I also looked for any type of instruction and in the online manual, the image of the batt compartment is silver. So I really thought that piece was supposed to come out. Luckily I only pulled off the tab. I was told to superglue it back on by CS. And for previous posters who stated that its obvious what the tab is for because all phones have it, I have never had a tab like that in a phone. I have seen them in battery compartments for other electronics but they are usually red and some kind of fabric.

Ok i'm one of the ppl who pulled the tab marked "pull". Go figure. To take your battery out, just smack the top of the phone into your palm. Do it hard. The battery will fall out.

I also pulled that tab completely off. If it hadn't said "pull" I never would have done it, but it looked just like one of those tabs you see on printer heads that you're supposed to remove, so I pull it off, which ripped off the fcc label. It is almost impossible to remove the battery if you don't have that tab in there. I fixed it easily enough with some black electrical tape, although I guess I no longer have a warranty. If you've completely mangled it and you can't tape it back together, you can just take some electrical tape and wrap it around the top of your battery, but leave a tiny bit of it hanging off to create your own tab that is attached directly to the battery. Then just pull up on that makeshift tab to remove it.

I am in a real pickle since mine didnt even come with the stupid tab so even gluing it in isnt an option. I'll be calling later to discuss this with M and V...

It said "PULL" so I naturally pulled it. Almost every toner cartridge I've used has a similar looking tab that says "pull." I've removed dozens of these things from computer and electronics parts over the years and I've never seen a tab that says "pull off." It would have been better if the tab said "Do not remove" rather than "do not cut." If you look at the plastic that covers the screens of most phones, they usually have some kind of tab that you're supposed to pull up to remove. I just thought this was the same deal.
