There are persons on the forum questioning whether this is real... Well, it is. I'm the wife - and I have an email from Motorolla CSR stating that their position is that the warranty is void. However, they do offer that I can send the phone in for them to review, but I was told this would likely just result in a confirmation of the same.
The reason given was this - "You have done physical damage to the phone. Physical damage voids the warranty." Everyone I have spoken to thus far has used this exact same line - Verizon and Motorola are in lock-step on this.
