Aw Jerry, you forgot Palm Pre had magnetic wireless charges back in 2009. It was called the Touchstone.
Yeah, as a Palm Pre owner.. I am happy that my next phone will FINALLY have wireless charging with a magnet again.. 15 years later. I have been waiting.

It won't stop any next great thing. Especially when it seems that next great thing will be even more wireless ( in term there won't be needed some close contacts/distance).

And if the next great thing is just another different cable or charger for each device it can go to the back end of the "great mind" that invented it.

I'm still missing the point of this article other than need to write it.

I would understand your concern here, except the original Qi standard existed and it never stopped anyone from developing faster or better wireless chargers. Chargers that when paired with their own devices, offer faster charging and other functionality.
Both generations of Pixel Stand offered standard Qi charging rates when not paired with a Pixel device.
They didn't perform worse than a standard charger would with other devices.
There's no reason the same thing can't happen again, and there's also no reason that all of the members of the Wireless Charging Consortium can't contribute work to develop the standard further, the same way that Apple has done.
