Question abou the performance

i currently have a Verizon Fascinate that I am effectively using a 4in WiFi tablet. I've found that if the phone portions of the Fascinate are turned off (SMS and phone) the "phone" works great. I was hoping that a WiFi Android tablet would also work great because there wouldn't be a phone aspect to slow things down. However, the main knock on these Honeycomb tablets (Xoom, G-Slate, early reviews of Samsung 10.1) is that they are sluggish and buggy. I've also read where some of the slow down comes from installing apps that aren't optimized for a tablet. So, my question is just how pronounced is the sluggishness and bugginess?

i am tryping this with my xoom plugged in to my monitor, using my bluetooth keyboard on my motorola keyboard. With the new update, the lag is all but gone. I am very happy with this update and my xoom.

It's definitely a bit smoother now than before. Loading apps is much quicker and scrolling through the app drawer is less of a chore.

But it does still get bogged down and you will still see lag at apparently random intervals. And there's a bug that makes homescreen performance in portrait mode very sluggish.

Honestly, if you're not missing a tablet in your daily life, there's not much point in buying one at this point in time. There's still a lot of refining and optimisation to do. Wait a few months and see what the market looks like then. You'll probably be glad you did.

the general consensus seems to be that the 3.1 update fixed a lot of the lag. some of the reviews (bgr.com in particular) i was reading were extremely negative on HC. Albeit that review was prior to 3.1. i just wonder how far off the 3.1 update is for the 10.1

You know, looking back i think some of those reviews were very generous. 3.0 was a bit of a mess compared to the iPad. If I wasn't already a fan of the platform I probably would have returned my Xoom after a week.

Tab launches around June 8th so I'd expect it to ship with 3.1 or receive it within a week or two of launch. I hope it's the former because if it launches with 3.0 you can expect another round of lukewarm reviews.

I think I'm probably going to buy one myself.

Personally, I did not see all that much difference between the two, and I got to play with the Xoom and the IPad2 side by side. I did notice the ipad home screens scroll a a little smoother, but just on the eye candy side, I still got to the other screens just as fast. Lots of home screen widgets that load data can take a bit to load load or refresh (email, calendar, etc) but the ipad just does not give them as an option, so you do not see the issue. But you do not get your email and calendar on the home screen either. I really do not see where all the negative comments are coming from myself.... but thats just me. It's also a first gen device, so I give it a little more slack. The next revs should be quite spectacular, similar to the advancements the phones made in just the first few hardware revs.
