Question about AT&T delaying phone updates

I've seen many people complain about HTC phones on AT&T having a bad reputation when it comes to getting updates. Can somebody tell me why HTC doesn't just let you download a software on your computer, hook up your phone to it and update it....like how iTunes does it with the iPhone? Does HTC have such a software? What about Samsung Kies? Can people who have Samsung phones just update their phones using Kies and completely bypass AT&T?

On a related note, my wife got the Lumia 900 recently and as many people will know, it had data connectivity issues. Nokia pushed out an update with a couple of days and we were able to update her phone. How come AT&T didn't try to block or delay rolling that update out? What possible reason could they have for delaying phone updates to Android phones? How was that Nokia update different from any other update for that matter?

ATT, VZW and most of the others take the ROM from the manufacturer and then DEEPLY integrate the crapware they are paid to force on us. That is why it is delayed.

Even with Keis, you still wait until the carrier is done with it.

Not sure what Nokia does to theirs, and that is also a windows phone so it is a different animal.

WP and IOS have control over there OS's they really don't let carriers customize and the little that WP allows which is just apps you can uninstall and they are the OS and in apple' case the OEM for the device google lets everyone do what they want with all of these diff versions and the carriers can determine when to release once they QC and go through their own processes. Just my two cents oh and the manufacture of the phones let them do so much customizing its crazy. Remember when HTC released the One Series back at MWC and they told everyone that they wanted all of the products to line up more unified than all of these diff versions you see how long that lasted right, Sprints is the EVO 4G LTE with some custom crap, Verizon is getting a droid incredible weaker version of the One S. and we got the One X with S4 chip because of LTE so all of these diff chips and so on cause delays once googs release the cookies to them all.

Pretty much the severity of the Lumia data connectivity issue prompted the quick update. If any other phone had a similar issue, I'd imagine it would get the necessary fix ASAP.

from what i am reading on this forum the HTC One X is having data connect issues with wifi so the clock is now ticking it took nokia a week i can only hope when my phone arrives later today that it does not have the wifi issues that the others are having. also it must be an HTC thing because the Titan II over in WPcentral forums has wifi connect issues and they have not received any update from HTC.

The Lumia had an issue where it wouldn't connect to the cellular data network. That's an issue that a manufacturer and carrier would probably fix quicker than a Wi-Fi only issue.

It's complicated. Hard to blame just one or the other. How many times have updates been pushed out just to be pulled because it was bricking phones?
