Question About Contacts

I thought that a contact on my phone was a contact on my Gmail account. But when I got a call from a number I didn't have stored it asked me if I wanted to make it a contact. I said yes. Then it asked phone contact or Gmail contact. This got me confused. I thought they were the same thing.

Another question I have. I have a lot of my contacts linked with Gmail, Facebook, and they are on my phone. It is really annoying because when I got to send a text, email, or call them I get duplicates of their phone numbers showing up.

Anyone help me?

They are not. One is stored on Google's server the other is stored on the phone. you can link them together though. and if you have a Facebook account those are also displayed in the 'people' app. and before anybody says that the Google one is stored on the phone, yes there is a local copy but it is not in the phone's phone book.
