Question about things that automatically run...

I use a Task Killer and put all the basic things on the Ignore list (Alarm Clock, text messaging, gmail, widgets, etc.). I fully understand how this all works.

My concern however is all the things that pop up all the time by themselves that I dont want or need to have running. For example: Amazon MP3, Skype Mobile, City ID, Social Networking (I dont use Facebook or anything like that), and other things.

Whenever I check whats running it shows My Available Memory is 55M with all the bloat running. I kill em all and jump back to around 100M, sometimes after a fresh restart closer or above 200M. But to no avail, within 5 minutes all the crap is running again.

What should I do? Should I just suck it up and add all that to the ignore list so that it doesnt bother me? Should I change the settings in the task killer and make it kill all of those apps very often? How much does it really affect me to have them running?

Thanks for the responses in advance.

what you should do is stop looking at it and let the system take care of itself.

unless the phone is running really slow, i wouldn't even install a task manager, and even then, i'd uninstall any new apps to see if that helps before that.

there is no real need for a task manager in android.

I use the task manager because some programs when exited don't shut down. I was experiencing a little lag and also quicker battery loss without it.

Sorry, but you do not understand "how these things work" if you are using a task manager, especially in 2.2. The OS is purposely trying to use as much memory as possible, because that makes your phone faster and uses less battery. Holding a thread in memory does not use as much battery as the CPU reloading it from disk if you force it to shut it down. Also, if it's in memory when you want to use it there will be no lag, while if it's not at least partially loaded into memory there will be. It's not like a desktop OS, or the BB OS, where each app is loaded into memory when you launch it and then closes when you exit. The OS is purposely managing memory to improve the performance of your phone, and using a task killer is screwing up its ability to do so.

If you are really concerned about the bloatware that is launching, learn more about rooting and rename (but don't delete!) the apks of the bloatware with a ".old" at the end. That will prevent them from launching, and may indeed make your phone a bit snappier. Using a task killer will not do so, especially in 2.2 where with JiT the OS is even more aggressive about managing memory.

Good luck!

get root and then install (and configure correctly) autokiller - that will fix you up!
