Question Question mark ❓ next to contact

My wife messages have a question mark in her little bubble where a person's contact photo or first initial would be and I can't figure out why. I originally thought it was because I have an emoji before her name but I have an emoji next to my daughter's name as well and her's just displays a little person in the bubble. It's driving me nuts

It may be that the emoji you're using in front of your wife's name is nonstandard.

Is the emoji you used for your daughter a little person, or are you saying that's incorrect as well? From what I've seen, emojis often don't work well in contact names.

No. My daughter's name has a cat emoji and the system placed a little icon there. Although maybe that's all the question mark is but my wife uses the same emojis for me in her phone and I asked her about it and my contact info on her end is normal. I'm gonna delete the emoji and see if that's all it boils down to.

Turns out the question mark is simply a symbol. Rather than an alert to take action or something. I feel dumb lol.

Oh yeah, that's what I was thinking as well (sorry I wasn't clear about that). When an emoji can't be displayed, it often shows up as a bunch of characters that remind me of Wingdings, so I think that's what you're seeing.
