First of all we need a tips and tricks thread and/or issues thread.
Now the question:
Feeling really dumbed out here but I cannot figure out how to apply a personalized tone to a particular contact for sms. A ringtone for calls works , no problem but not a message tone. Is this a pure android pixel thing that's missing or am I just missing something obvious?

If you're using the default "messages" app, go to the thread of the person you want a custom tone for, hit the menu dots up top > people & options> notifications> sound.

Yeah, I do this but it also changes the phones default tone setting to the contacts tone setting. So if I get a news alert notification or anything else it sounds like my gf is texting me. There in lies my problem. I'm thinking I'm surely doing something wrong but as much as I try it defaults the other one to both being the same. Annoying as heck
