I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add a device other than a TV or cable box. I don't see an option for DVD players, audio systems, gaming consoles, etc. I can't find an update for the app anywhere either. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you hit the plus in the circle in upper right corner?

Yep, the only options I get are for TV or cable box. On a somewhat related note, my cable box / company isn't listed in the options. Isn't there somewhere you could train the app to learn new remotes. I think I remember reading that somewhere.

I have options for customizable remote on the add remote screen and learn remote in the remote screens. Can you reset to default and start over?

I reset the data for the QuickRemote app and am still only getting options for TV or cable box. Which version of the G Pad do you have, the black or white? Is there any way you would be able to upload your APK somewhere?

I think jaime1822 is referencing the QuickRemote app on the LG G2, not the G Pad. I just bought a G Pad, and it only has the very limited options for TVs and Cable Boxes. The G2 has much more, and has a learn mode. I tried extracting the APK from the G2, but when I try to install it on the G Pad, it attempts to update the built in QuickRemote, then fails. I don't know why they gimped it on the G Pad. Maybe it doesn't have a receiver, so it can't learn, but there's no excuse for the lack of TV brands and other devices. They already had all the codes on the G2. I think mine is going back to Best Buy tomorrow, because of this and other issues.

Thanks jamesoneal. This isn't a deal breaker for me, I just hope LG will release an updated version for the G Pad at some point because it would be a useful feature.

Can you uninstall the G Pad version and/or disable it? After that try to install the G2 version. If you cannot uninstall the G Pad version, you can always root it, uninstall it (backup before this of course), then try the G2 version.

I may give peel remote a try as it works great on my wife's GNote 10.1.

I spoke to LG support today and there is currently no way to add anything other than a TV or cable box. If your device isn't listed, it's not supported. If LG updates the app for more options, it should appear in the Update Center.

I'm strongly considering returning the tablet, and I haven't been able to confirm if I can get back to stock if I root, so I'm not able to do that. When I get home, I can upload the APK somewhere if you want to try it. It is 160mb for some reason.

I think LG's IR blaster is interfaced in a non-standard way(if there even is a standard). I doubt anything that works an a Samsung product would work on anything LG. LG has released the QRemote SDK, so someone could develop a better remote app.

Being that I don't have a TV on LG's short list, I can't comment on the performance of the G Pad's IR blaster. I can say the LG G2's blaster is next to worthless. The LED is weak and extremely directional. You have to hold it up in the air where you can't see the screen for any device that's up high, and for televisions you have to pretty much be right in front of it and point directly at the IR eye. Useless.

I was able to use the G Pad 's QuickRemote at my parents house yesterday and it worked flawlessly with their TV and cable box. I was able to turn on each device, change channels, turn the volume up and down, etc. It was really freaking my mom and dad out because they had no idea that I was controlling it from my tablet!

I figured that I would check with a third-party dev about adding our tablet to their app, so I sent an email to the dev of Smart IR Remote asking if they were planning on adding support for the LG G2 and G Pad 8.3. They replied that LG locked and encrypted access to the IR Blaster and the only way to access the blaster is through LG's SDK. This does not allow access to the dev's database, but only to devices already working with QuickRemote. The dev is hoping LG will implement the native Android IR APIs when 4.4 comes, but their hands are tied until then.

Want the APK and odex file?

I think this will work:

My Files

I'll see if I can try it out tonight. No promises. I did get my quick remote to work perfectly with my Vizio TVs and Comcast cable boxes.

Strange...are you using the QuickRemote app that came with the tablet or the one uploaded from the G2 a couple of posts up (post #13)? My QuickRemote only gives me the option for TV or cable box and absolutely nothing for DVD or Blu-ray. Combine our two QuickRemotes together and we've got it covered!

*Edit to add that I haven't tried the G2 remote yet. I plan to later tonight or maybe sometime tomorrow.

Sounds good. If you find you need any other files, let me know and I'll upload them. I'm interested to see if the learning feature from the G2 works on the G Pad as well.

Well, I nervously tried to install it after backing up the g pad version. I got the following message:

"Parse error. There is a problem parsing the package."

I'll hold off for now. I'm satisfied so far with the basic remote.

Darn, same result here. Haven't tried the AOSP remote yet.
