What is a radio? I always hear about people flashing new radios and something bad ends up happening and some people do it successfully. What is it and what does it do?

The radio is the actual cellular radio in your phone, it runs the radio side of the phone, also on the Evo we have a WiMax (4G) radio.

Radio software updates are a fickle beast - some times you get faster speeds on old versions. You can find all of the applicable radio versions for the evo here: [ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

Radios never usually give too much of a problem when flashing, just make sure to reboot normally from recovery so installation can finish.

If you are not rooted then you really don't have to worry about updating your radios. If there are updated radios, they will come in the OTA update you recieve from Sprint/HTC. If you are rooted and using custom ROM images, then those images may be based off the latest versions of the OS and updating the radios may be required to get the newer ROMs to work correctly.
