So if I plug in my headphones, I hear all kind of random (possibly game) sound effects. But I have all apps closed. Any idea what this could be? Makes me feel like there's some kind of app running invisibly. Which could definitely drain my battery.

Are they loud? Can you pause/unpause them using the headset controls? If not, it might be a faulty jack or cable, and it's causing 'crosstalk', picking up signals from analog transmissions around you, like phones and radio stations. Digital signals can sometimes sound like sounds from an old videogame.

When I locked the phone, it showed each file name as it would play. So it is indeed playing sound effects files.

Yup, probably an app auto-playing when you press the play button on your headset or something. Weird though.

No buttons being pressed. It's an auxiliary cable going to my car's head unit.

Ooooh, then yeah, check the cable. It might be touching stuff that shouldn't be making contact and making the phone 'think' you're pressing headset buttons. I've had this happen before, so it's not that weird.
