Randomly deleting all my text messages?

My original text messaging program would forceclose so often once it hit a certain number of msgs. That got extremely annoying and it also deleted all the texts. I installed handcent and its way better but everyonce in a while, it too force closes and again the texts are gone. Not very good for when you need to keep important text messages....

This is the exact same thing that's happening to me.

This has happened to me twice. Up until I found this thread, I had assumed I had accidentally pressed the delete all threads option somehow.

I've never had this problem.. but it has forced closed on me a few times.. has it forced closed then you noticed that all your messages have been deleted?

This happened to me as well. They just got deleted right now, the last time was a week ago. Tuesday to Tuesday, is there a weekly thing I am missing to delete my messages?

Do you guys have 3rd party SMS apps installed?
If not and it continues to happen try installed Dexrex, it is an SMS archiver so you can pull up those text messages

Twice already, Enough is Enough!

One of the most frustrating things is not being able to trust your own phone. For a phone like the Droid, a simple thing like texting should not be this buggy. This has happened to me twice, the first time I lost thousands of messages, and this time I lost a few hundred. I use text records to look back at conversations I have had with people, as well as reminders of things that others have asked me to do. It seems that this has only started happening since the update... Today I texted my father and after I sent the message, I noticed that the name was not "Dad Cell" but that of my friend. I thought I had texted the wrong person, but all of the messages in the conversation were to and from my father. When I went back, and then clicked "Dad Cell" again, the name was fine. Then today, about an hour ago, all of my texts were just gone. After the first time I changed my settings to never delete old messages and it did it again anyway! I am going to see if I can get a new phone because this is ridiculous.

P.S. Does anyone know of a way to recover old messages?

I guess you guys are really maxing out the texting system. I only have 50 or so threads and about 1,000 messages after two months with the droid. I use Handcent and have never lost a message. Even when I type a partial text and back out, it saves the text as a draft ..

If you are getting FC's then "something" is conflicting and probably causing the problem. Has anyone done a factory reset and just loaded handcent and tried texting bunches to see if the problem still occurs? I also see an option in handcent to do a self-check and verify the message is saved (when received). (in handcent) Under Settings > Retrieve settings > Self-Check

As far as backing up SMS/MMS, there are many good free apps out there. After reading this thread, I d/l several. If you are rooted, one great app is Backup for Root users. It can backup/restore any / everything to the sdcard/BackupRoot. Also, SMS backup & restore looks good.

As far as retrieving deleted texts, I have done that with older phones (non-smart) b/c they stored deleted texts in a file. I have also used a file recovery program to retrieve deleted files/pics, etc from the sdcard BUT texts aren't stored there. I think you would need to be rooted and mount the system and explore that way ..

I would contact one of the backup/restore app devs and see if they could help (for a small donation) ;-)

I think the people that are telling the phone to not automatically delete messages ever are doing it wrong. The better route seems to be to lower it. I think the messaging deletes all the messages when it runs out of memory. I've had it happen 5 times now, and from what I can tell, it happens when you have too many texts. Memory is a finite amount, and I guess this is how Android manages it.

This has happened to me twice before. The first time I had Handcent installed, it force closed, and when I went back in all my threads/messages were erased. After this, I uninstalled Handcent, assuming it was the cause. But a week or so later the messaging app froze, I restarted the phone, and all my texts were gone again.

I just downloaded SMS Backup incase it happens again.. quite frustrating though

This just happened to me this morning, and I want to add my details to thread...

  • No 3rd party SMS apps
  • Threshold set to 200 (not 5000)
  • Received 3 MMS and 3 SMS texts overnight, awoke and choose "messages", the screen blinked quickly and when my message screen opened there was NOTHING THERE!!
  • No Force Close

I don't rely on keeping my texts, so I'm not devastated, but I am a bit disappointed, my Droid is less than a week old!!!!

I've been a Blackberry fan girl for years and can tell you that this happens to BB devices when memory gets low. HOWEVER, I have VERY FEW apps on my Droid (maybe 4-5) and there was nothing but the standard stuff running in the background. I use Advanced Task Killer to shut down everything in the background quite frequently. I have anywhere from 60-80M free at any given moment. Doesn't seem that lack of sufficient memory or third party apps are my problem. Also, no Force Close occured at all!!

i have a droid and my messages r set to 5000 also and i had no where near even a thousand and mine has done that exact thing twice today. msngr will force close n then i go back and all my convos to everyone r deleted... its extremly annoying... someone make an app to fix it !!!!!

Well I'm glad it's not just me. But I wish I knewabout this earlier, as I just lost all my messages today while at the gym. Lost 2 months worth of messages. I was happy to be able to set it to not delete them, since I wasnt able to do this on my Palm Centro, but apparently it didnt matter, it just deleted every message anyway.

the same thing has been happening to me, sometimes twice a day where my stock messaging app will force close with no warning and delete all my messaging threads....getting a lil annoying cuz sometimes i dont automatically store mms pics to my sd card and when i do decide to do so my threads are gone......

It's never happened to me but I frequently wipe my phone wave secure is a great AP to backup your messages and restore them
