Rant: Absolutely unacceptable that the 3.1 update doesn't fix lag

If you don't have multiple tabs open you're doing it wrong.!

Can't say I've noticed any particular pattern to the crashes but I basically always have at least 2 or 3 tabs open..

I was iPad 2 around 14 hours a day when there was no Xoom. Not a lot of apps for me at this point, so I'm doing all my browsing and Pulse on the Xoom trying to get my time in that way. I've yet to see a browser issue with a single tab, only two or more. So maybe Google needs to look there.

Have you tried Dolphin? I've thought about making that jump in the past. Is the keyboard delay there as well?

I've only used Dolphin on my phone. Didn't think it was that great. Tabs were the main advantage but now we have them in the stock browser.

I've used Opera a few times and it seemed pretty good, but I wasn't posting on any forums so can't confirm keyboard lag in that.

hmm...I just went through the rest of the threads and I'm not the only one having troubles.....a lot of people are saying the browser is even worse than before, etc. etc. Hopefully Google will get its developers on here and address consumer's concerns.....

Like i said in my first post....who cares about the new features if they can't fix the old ones

Listen, speaking as somebody who has been using Android for two years and was an iPhone user previously, you need to learn to ignore the people who are saying they've never seen any problems. They are not being truthful. You get these weird zealots in both camps who feel like it's their duty to police against bad publicity for their product of choice.

There are still iPhone users who claim the antenna issue doesn't exist, just like there are Xoom users in this very thread who will attack anybody for mentioning the L word.

All the problems you mentioned are real and are affecting every Xoom, not just yours and mine.

I only need one tab open at any giving time but occasionaly I like to be adventurous and open 3. My experience so far is stellar compared to a month ago and would only imagine it to get even better a few updates down the road. In short my xoom is running like a champ no lag. My definition to tech lag is more then a 1/4 of a second delay and that's to much and I don't see this even possible on the xoom. Some of you are way to anal.

A Fanboys

I guess that since we keep seeing the rants (most likely from Apple Fanboys), the folks that love Apple, no matter how much power and control their devices "protect" you from are worried! Honeycomb and the Xoom really have them wondering if being under Uncle Steve's thumb is such a comfortable place to be.

All I can say to the fanboys is ... its only gonna get better for us and worse for you!

yea....everyone you see complainign is a fanboy

that must be the reason!

the only apple product I own is a 5 year old ipod nano....im such a big fanboy! :p

can u explain this lag? Im running 3.1 rooted and specialkernel I wish my xoom wasn't so fast I can't keep up with it

There are no lag issues. Nobody has been able to demonstrate "lag" yet. This is not to say there are no issues at all. The lack of smoothness upside down and in portrait is clearly there. It seems like most posters think this is a minor thing with a few people thinking it's the end of the world as we know it.

Let's be clear in our definition of "lag". "Lag" is a delay, as in "lag behind".

"Lag" needs to be an UNINTENTIONAL delayed response to input. You may not like the programmed delay when changing orientation, but that doesn't make it lag.

You may not like the lack of smoothness when the unit is upside down, but that's not lag. The unit is still keeping up with touch strokes.

"Lag" should be in comparison to other tablets. If no other tablet on the planet does it faster, it's not lag. That's just how long it takes to do it. To define tablet lag as ANYTHING/EVERYTHING that does not occur instantaneously, regardless of whether any other tablet can do it, is simply ridiculous.

You may want active widgets to render more quickly when screen orientation changes, but unless you can point to another device that renders active widgets faster, it's unfair to describe it as lag.

Very well said.

I certainly see what you call Lag when you press the home screen when in certain programs....it is a delayed response..taking from 5-10s to actually occur....CNN app is a good example

just did the cnn to home thing and it changed in about 1second. Are you sure you don't have a defective unit? Do you have alot of live widgets on your home page or live wall paper? If so then maybe that's a contributing factor. If not then maybe you should consider taking your xoom back and getting a new one. Or hold out for the new galaxy, i'm thinking of getting my wife one if only to compare it to the xoom.

yea...all 5 of my screns are filled with widgets....I counted 16

Now before y'all say I'm going overboard...my EVO has the entire 7 screens filled with widgets with 21 of them with absolute no delay or lag

What I have found to be helping is to use fast reboot or the "end all" function in system panel

A good buddy of mine was at google i/o and received one.

I haven't been able to see it, but he told me "if you have gotten used to the solid and durable feel of the xoom, the samsung will feel cheap and poorly made compared to it"

Personally I see browser updating without waiting for a complete system update one of the major advantages of using another browser like Dolphin / Opera. Google needs to treat the Android Browser as a separate app and update it regularly like they do Chrome.

Must be something else going on that I'm missing. I'm no fan of CNN, but just loaded the app. I don't see a lag.

What exactly is one to do to see this 5 to 10 second lag? I'm touching the categories on the left, which open up stories within that category. I then touch the middle button (home) and the screen immediately changes. It's done as I'm pulling my finger away. We're taking tenths of a second. I couldn't imagine another tablet performing any faster.

Is there a way to include a quick video clip in this forum? It would be useful to see exactly what people are claiming and how exactly they got there.

I'm really busy with work...I just take a few mins to sign on here on my free time....ill do that next weekend when i have some time

Well, I ended up doing a hard reset and applied the 3.1 update via flash-able file. I can now say that the only problem I have is the keyboard input lag on the browser. I am throughly impressed.

I may have screwed something previously, but after a hard reset, it is essentially flawless. Great work Google!

Now just fix the keyboard input lag and enable SD and I will be 100% satisfied
