Rant - I am Beginning to Despise Android, WTF is wrong with Google?

@Richard Fenyman,

I think given the responses and comments made in here you will have to agree that iOS and Android are two different animals. Any platform for that matter. With that comes much adapting when switching to a new platform/OS. I'm not going to stand here and say that Google is perfect and everything is how it should be, thats far from the truth but they are making great strides to improve the overall OS and the common apps that accompany it on a daily basis.

Well said.

There is definitely room for both criticism and improvement in anything in life. I won't deny that. But do I really need to point out there is a huge world of difference between "room for further improvement" and "Google is SO F'N STUPID" and "experience [is] destroyed by idiotic BS", and an "endless series of useless s*&t shoved down my throat" and "I'd like to shove this phone up someones A$$ at Google right now".
Make sure to ignore the point where I said I was purposely being over the top.
And then, that wasn't enough so 5 minutes laster, this followed "BTW, Apple handles this 10X better."
Oh my, the HORROR! If I had said they handle it 2x better would that have been just as horrendous, or would that have been within the realm of acceptability?

Are you surprised that people would react
Nope, nor am I surprised that almost everyone reacted nicely, with some agreeing and some disagreeing.

particularly when you didn't understand how the notification system worked?
The only thing I didn't know was that I could press and hold on a notification to take me to that apps notification settings. If it makes you feel good and superior
to keep saying that means I "didn't know how the notification system worked", go for it.

They're not "clueless sheep who just buy iphones because they're stupid and buy what everyone else buys".
*They're not all clueless sheep. But, a lot of people just say iPhones are better just because they're better. Those are the type of iPhone owners that actually are clueless sheep.

I am more than happy to have to shut specific notifications off. The Devs didn't force me to buy or download their apps but I much prefer using Swiftkey to not using it so will let them remind me or ask me to do things. I actually watched the videos and did learn some things I wasn't aware of! Who knew, almost like that was the intent.

Plus I flash a new ROM every other day anyway until I have what I like best which is much more hassle. So then I will shut out notifications I don't want when I have a ROM I like best. It might just be me but I like any reason to pick my phone up and play with it!

I don't think that type of thinking is isolated to any one OS. If you want to see the ultimate example of "sheep" or "koolaid drinkers" go back in time and visit the Blackberry forums a few years ago. If you posted there about how BB better get their act together if they wanted to stay in the game, all you got was a bunch of outraged BB fanbois telling you that iPhone and Android were "toys". In my mind a "sheep" is someone who wraps their identity up in their purchase and goes on the attack if someone offers the opinion that someone else is doing something better (which hardly anyone here has done BTW).

We both have the same definition of a "sheep", but I do stand by my point. There are a lot of people like this, and I'm talking about real life, where you know, it's real.

Not to reply to any particular post but I was just thinking this exact same thing, but in regards to location settings. At least there is a way to change the app notifications. I have no clue which apps have access to my location settings and it's turn it all off and give none access, or try to figure it out on your own. Apple, again, does this really well. On the other hand, it drives me crazy when I update an iOS app and it closes the App store and switches to the app home page forcing you to reopen the App Store and your to-be-updated list. There are lots of things one platform does better than the other.

And, you don't necessarily want to turn off all the notifications on all your apps. I did this for one and it stopped working for its intended purpose (LightFlow).

Ugh. My only response to you on this thread, prior to YOU personally calling me a koolaid drinker, etc. was where very early in the thread I gave you the solution to your problem in a much more polite way than you started the thread. The big joke, beside your rant, is that all the proposed solutions you kept spouting were no where near as good as the actual process that google already implemented. It just comes down to the fact that you didn't understand the system, and there is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is the way you complained about it, ignored the solution, continued to complain, then called me a koolaid drinker for saying that Android's solution was better - although, I suppose in your mind it is ok for you, without knowledge of the Android system, insist that iOS handles it 10x better.

How can a company like Google simultaneously have their act so together that they create the Android OS, and then be SO F'N STUPID that they allow the experience to be destroyed by idiotic BS. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S4. It's a GREAT phone but:

1. Why the hell should I have to spend an hour going through all my apps and turning off endless freaking notifications? Does Google really think I want to know every time the phone uploads a note to Evernote? Every time it uploads a photo to G+? Ad nauseum. And I'm a geek so I'll spend the time to do it, but that means 90% of the users out there are just living with these endless notifications. And if Google is going to allows apps to default to notifications ON, how about giving me one central place or command to turn them off?!

2. I'm now getting other notifications on my phone that I consider the equivalent of ads. Yesterday Swiftkey popped up a notification asking me to watch their tutorial videos. Now today they popped up a notification reminding me I could have it scan Facebook and Gmail to learn my text habits. So I go into the settings and find there is a F&&*NG setting for receiving notifications about "tips and tricks". Are you kidding me?!

I bought this phone to be more productive, not have an endless series of useless s*&t shoved down my throat. I'd like to shove this phone up someones A$$ at Google right now.

Do you think that Google ever wondered if you would like to be told everytime you uploaded a note to Evernote? Do you think that Google is responsible for independant devs notifying you about videos on how to use their apps?

Really?

OK, I get the purposefully ott bit, but first and foremost you are talking about (for the most part) independant, third party apps that have nothing whatsoever to do with Google. If you find their notificaions intrusive then surely it is the devs who should recieve the full force of your obviously considerable wrath?

Or is it Google's fault that there is no master kill switch for notifications? Think about it, notifications are there for a reason, to erm, well, notify you of something. I am not saying that the fact cannot be abused by reckless devs touting for in-app purchases, but that does not seem to be your complaint. If Google did build in your master switch then your phone would never tell you anything until you asked it would it? App updates? Email? Sms messages? Battery warnings? What about incoming calls? Yes you could probably hit the switch and then go back in and manually select the apps that you did want to allow notifications from, but how would that be any different to what you are doing now?

Only you can install these apps on your devices and when you do it is you that give them the permission to send you notifications, Google allow it because (when used legitimately) it is the whole point of notifications. If you don't like it, uninstall the app and find an alternative, or take the time to set the app up properly to your preferences, but you cannot throw your dummy at Google for providing what is actually a necessary functionality.

So your feelings were hurt that I wasn't polite to the Google engineers? And to think I called you a koolaid drinker.

Yes, really. That's what OS developers do, they think about what level of freedom they want to give developers and how that freedom may affect end users satisfaction with the OS. And that freedom can range anywhere from being very controlling as Apple is, to very uncontrolling as Google IMO is. They also think about that not only from the vantage point of what freedom they want to give them, but how they can make it easy for the user to limit those freedoms if the developer abuses them. They also think about these issues independently of developers, for instance, "if we give the user the ability to do this quickly and easily it's result in a better user experience".

Really.

And we have already told you several times. Long press the notification from the offending developer. It takes you directly to the check box to turn off notifications. How much easier can it be to limit the fieedomes if the devleoper abuses them. How much quicker and easier could it be? How would you know before the first notification that the developer was going to "abuse" the freedom of giviing you notifications for an app that you install?

Not hurting my feelings at all. Just hurting your reputation.

Alright guys. The name calling and insinuation of worse names that an individual could be called, has to stop. Op, everyone is being very patient with you here. Please return that kindness.

O
Except if you read his rant, it has nothing to do with Touchwiz but everything to do with apps, and how app notifications aren't centrally managed or not managed in any consistent way.

I think Google is slowly moving towards something like that, but we'll see.. In the meantime it's a mess, and while I'm not angry like the OP, I do agree that this needs to be cleaned up.

And IMO, this is why people still buy iPhones. They're not "clueless sheep who just buy iphones because they're stupid and buy what everyone else buys". Apple has actually thought these things through BEFORE releasing the product! Granted, some of their decisions are now getting obsolete and is limiting the OS, but they were strong design decisions initially. Meanwhile Google puts stuff out there and see how it evolves, that's why every Android version changes looks and functionality. Because Google didn't think it through before, they put it out there to see what people do with it THEN improve it. Both approaches have theor pros and cons obviously...
Apple didn't think it through. Steve Jobs thought it through. There is a huge difference. Steve told many people to **** off to get his way. Limited and functional. This is apple. Do you get some functions that are helpful? Sure. But you also get stupid lacking functions like no easy way to disable data, bluetooth or wifi easily. My daughters iphone 5 has huge problems with the data being used even while wifi is on. $1280 cell bill problems. It's a major issue with ios6. So to reflect on the OP. "why does Apple do stupid things"?

The world is not perfect people. Chill out until it is. It's a phone. calm down. They want your life to be better. It takes time.

Very patient with me? Seriously? For what, starting a rant about excessive notifications? Except for some silly flaming with SCjRqrQCnBQ19QoYCtdl there has barely been an unkind word in this thread and the extent of "name calling" was telling someone they are a koolaid drinker. Give me a break. Goodbye.
